Weight Question


Can anyone please help me out with the following query.confused
My van has a ATM of 2000Kg and a ball weight of 100Kg, I had it weighed today (water tank full (100L) and both gas bottles full) and got the figures;
on 1730
off 1830

Do I use the on or off figures to determine what I can put in the van?
I think is the on figure but as I am new to this I just want to make sure. I probably shopuld of asked at the weigh station but didn't think of it at the time.

Gross trailer mass (or GTM) is the maximum weight allowed on the wheels of the trailer/caravan.

Aggregate trailer mass (or ATM) is the maximum weight to which you can load your trailer/caravan. It is equal to the sum of the GTM and ball weight.

Dazza, I thought GTM, (GROSS Trailer Mass) was GROSS = everything.
But I would stand corrected......I know nothing of these matters.

There are effectively 3 criteria to be aware of

ATM  is the total laden weight of a trailer which includes the tow ball mass and whatever is payload (water gas food clothing etc etc ) ATM is specified by the manufacturer and must not be exceeded  )

GTM

is the total permissable mass which includes whatever you add as payload that can be supported by the wheels This does not include the mass supported by the towball as such.  GTM is specified by the manufacturer. 
hence ATM minus GTM is towball weight
 
then you have

GCM (gross combined mass ) which is the maximum load of loaded vehcle and loaded caravan   GCM is specified by the vehicle manufacturer (tow vehicle)

then there is simply Tare weight which is unladed weight

Weight compliance is vital if insurance covers is to be effective

Not certain what your query is Shelley. the weights specified are vehicle weights/mass as determined by the manufacturer. Thye are not those of road authorities. about the only thing a state authority would stipulate is a maximum vehicle weight (usually CGM) on a particular road

I would have thought that your tow ball weight should be closer to 10% of your ATM as I am told this is rule of thumb. Having said that, I guess if the van tracks and tows well, you've got it right. If not, I'd suggest you load a bit more weight forward of the vans axle.

I am confused as well, my Scenic is 1900kg tare weight and is 260kg on towball. My ATM is 2750kg and GTM 2400kg. Your 100kg seems very light and as others have said, I believe it is  usually 10% of the tare weight.

I tow with a new Range Rover and can't use any weight distribution aids due to the air suspension. I have had to lower the van coupling 50mm ($900) to get the right towing height, it has been a real pain & Land Rover Australia were absolutely no help. They won't even allow a different goose neck in the tow hitch arrangement they have, viod the warranty if I use a Hayman Reece hitch. 

I should have stuck with the trusty Land Cruisers, have had 6 previously with no troubles but thought a change would be nice, never again!!!!
