Am I to understand the term "grey nomad" has now been extended to those among us that merely take longer holidays than others, or is it if one takes any sort of break and travels at all for any length of time automatically makes one a "grey nomad". have I already become one and realised my dream without knowing or realising it, if so what do I do now, those amongst us that travel but are not yet grey what do we call them, the not so grey sometimes nomads, I see by my last comment that it is a term held in high reverence by some and yet used to be ridiculed by many, the grey wanderers were once referred to as gypsies and vagabonds, hoboes, carpetbaggers as my father used to call them and as such were not to be trusted and yet now so many jump to their defence. I obviously must withdraw my last statement in fear of further retribution and must find another dream to aspire to, oh god life is becoming so complicated used to be so easy, sleep, work, eat, work, sleep, sometimes sleep at work. anyway call me what you will ( except late for dinner) I'm off again next month and I dont care where I wander too, the otways are nice this time of year

I'd call myself a grey nomad even though I still have a house which I 'lend' to friends and family while we're away. I've taken quite a few trips now - one that lasted approximately 18 months and a few other shorter ones of six months and eight months. I'd say that grey nomads are those older travellers who have the time to wander around Australia without having to say 'if it's Monday, this must be Mildura', etc. Their itineraries are often fluid and that's really what sets them apart from those on mad school holiday dashes. Some other qualities that I have seen in fellow grey nomads (whether they are travelling for 3 months, 3 years or thirty years) are friendliness, honesty and a great sense of humour. Having said all of that, I would love to be able to travel indefinitely; but I don't think I'm brave enough to let go of my 'conventional' life yet!
yes sue that is correct, but I do think the terminoligy has been overused, however when I was working full time we took 2 years off work to do a working holiday around australia, I had the time but I had to keep coming back, we have since circled the island twice as well as marauded tasmania a couple of times(not a grey nomad) after my elder sons education had concluded he nicked off overseas for twelve months, was he a grey nomad?, I still do forays out from the old nest as often and as long as I can get away without being missed, they keep dragging me back, but I dont consider myself a grey nomad as yet. I'm an old traveller, weatherbeaten worn out and a bit moth eaten but as yet I cant call myself that grandest of titles "grey nomad" , grumpy old man, a man that will place five words where one would do, yes that fits very well, but that exulted signage that I will hang with pride above my campsite will be in three years when I hand my household ownership to some other fool to pay off for the next 30 years, tear up the council rate papers, throw the electricity bill in the bin, hand over the paint brush, I will be under a gum tree somewhere worrying where the next days travel will take me. I will fly the australian flag with pride over my campsite, I will take the 4pm tipple and sup before the sun goes down, be lord of all I survey, I will acost and berate every other road user and confront all campers to come and share my campsite, I will brag about my travels and be the only one in the world to have ever seen the things that I have seen I will be a grey nomad a badge that Iwill wear with pride until then the passage needs painting again and the rubbish hasnt been put out yet, and that damn lawn, oh well 1095 days to go
