Tasmania .. Northeast coastline .... We spent a wonderful few days exploring the coastline around Bay of Fires through to Swansea, staying 4 nights each at Swansea and St Helens. The colours and the pristine branches are breathtaking. The turquoise of the water and the white sands will be something that will remain with me ... A hard act to follow. I must say I had it all wrong about what I thought the name Bay of Fires came from ... Thought it was the colour of the rocks, not so Mr Google informed me ....was named by a late 1700 explorer after the aboriginal's fires seen on shore from the ship. appears my education is sadly lacking.

Totally agree.

You know the NSW government missed a great opportunity to develop the wonderful region from say Ballina to the QLD border. Great country and would out rival the Mossman Daintree region of QLD.

Starting to see a lot more development in the region so expect to experience some great future development.

Great photos. Interesting for me as it's our next trip. Can you tell me about your flight please and also at Lawn Hill Gorge, Adels grove, looks like you are in a boat, was that a tour or a canoe on your own ? Looks magic!!!

lawn hill..........tour boat, great shady camping spots at resort, fully licensed, range of acomm........loved it.....hint tho, have fly nets or cream etc, damn annoying critters.

the flying bit..........our own aircraft, we use both/either ( road/air ) more so lately, everywhere by air, it's a whole new world...up there.

suggest seeing you are planning lawn hill, check out undara lava tubes......( link into tour guided by dennis......10/10 ) all ammenities etc etc, interesting acomm,railway carriages, plus sites

forgot.........in the general area as well...Burketown, strongly suggest, time Burketown around ( August....i think )...each yr around that time there is a unique cloud phinomenin ( can't spell that word )......massive rolling waves of clouds, folks travel worldwide to see it.......pay the $$$ get onto a charter plane there, and fly about those clouds.

At Lawn Hill NP you can hire an open two person canoe and paddle yourself up through the Middle Gorge to the Indarri Falls, then portage the canoe around the falls and paddle the Top Gorge as well. Superb scenery. The canoes are quite stable and since there is little current, the paddling is easy. I've known people over 80 do it. There are also several walks. One of these - Island Stack walk - gives views over the Lower Gorge (can't paddle this one) and down Lawn Hill Creek. Another - longer - one goes to a lookout over the Top Gorge and along side the creek to the Indarri Falls. About 7 kms return that one. Really recommend staying at Adels Grove campground rather than at the NP one.
Rather than stay at Undarra camp ground, we prefer Bedrock Village CP at Mt Surprise - great place. They do their own tours to the Undarra Tubes which some say are better.
Another really interesting place to visit in that region is Cobbold Gorge - campground and boat tour through the gorges. Unique.

The Simpson Desert is the most magic place I have been. Up the Birdsville track to Mungaranie, across the Desert, to Dalhousie Springs and Mt Dare and home via the Oodnadatta track. I would turn around and do it all over again. Magic Trip, without the Van of course.

Yep the Bungle Bungles (bee hives) hiked right around and into it over twenty years and its still for front in my mind ,

Sounds like it would take 2 -3 lifetimes to see all the magical places Australia has to offer.. I think it all depends on mood and circumstances. I have many magical places and I don't even have to leave home....LOL!

Billy Goat Bay just north of Greenhead is excellent for a few nights by the water. The council is also developing another campsite just north of it - Called Milligan Island campground. 35 sites being planned and Billy goat bay site will be closed once this has been developed.

Free camps- 16km east of Tumbarumba Animal wise- hard to beat Monkey Mia IMO for cost and the thrill Picturesque wise mtRoland Tassy Education wise, Shell beach Dampier and the nearby hundreds if petroglyphs in the open, free to see. River banks, Sandy beach on the Murray 13km west of Mulwala 4 km from the road.

Imlay Creek Campground/Rest Area far South Coast NSW. 12kms up the Imlay Road off the Princes Hwy. Small campground behind the Rest Area with drop toilets. We spent 4 quiet relaxing nights back in April surrounded by nature with no-one else around but the native animals & birds. Campfire every night, plenty of bush walking, local Oysters $7/doz from Wonboyn Lake not far away. We ate 6 dozen. Nothing better!

Just one of my favourite places, but the lookout at Vlamingh Head on North West Cape can amaze with its often stunning tropical Indian Ocean sunsets. Tour operators have a special where their patrons enjoy the spectacle with a celebratory tipple.

These images have appeared on another site, so if anyone has seen them before, please don't fret. Yep, they are my own. The lady sitting on the stone wall in peaceful contemplation is my gal Nik.
