Free Camping

We are very keen to do some free camping whilst tavelling. She who must be obeyed is a little concerned about the security aspect .
What are peoples thoughts, experiences on this issue?
Another point raised is , if we find somewhere we like and decide to set up camp for a few days how do you secure the van whilst doing some local touring?
Or do you use this time as R&R and not go anywhere.

thanks

In our case we only freedom camp.  Have not been into a caravan park for years.  As for security, never had any issues.  We do like to park in a NextG phone area, and with our large marine fold down aerial, we are seldom without coverage.  I am always amazed at the locations we have NextG.  I do have a complete NextG coverage map for Australia on my laptop, and do scan the map and look to see if there is coverage for the next days intended stop.  With the NextG aerial we usually get coverage outside the areas shown for coverage on the Telstra NextG coverage map.  I do also carry two marine parachute flares that could be let off through the toilet/shower roof vent in emergency.  Prudence and observation are the points you need for locations freedom camping.  If there is a lot of rubbish, beer cans or bottles you would not stop there.  Also not recommended to stay within 15km of a town especially on a Friday or Saturday night.  From experience hoons have a 10k limit of travel from town.  We never have issues finding a good freedom camp anywhere.  We have never ever had any issues freedom camping whatsoever.  Long may it last.

If there are other people at the location we are freedom camping, we ask them to keep an eye out on the caravan.  Others will ask you do the same at times.  Same as if someone is going to the nearest town to do shopping, and ask you to keep an eye on their caravan, majority will ask if you want bread or milk etc. while they are in town.  We do put our hitch lock onto our coupling and safety chains for extra security.  We dont leave our caravan unattended at a freedom camp.  If we do want to unhitch the caravan and tour the area, we find an average middle class suburb in the town, and unhitch the caravan and leave it there for the day with the coupling lock in place.

Reason we are setup completely to freedom camp with everything.  We don't need power or anything else.  We have solar panels, and everything we need on board including the washing machine.
