what insurance for your Motor vehicle.

We are getting things organised to head off for a few years travelling/working around our great country and were wondering if you could advise us as to the best company to insure your motor vehicle while travelling.   Our
RACQ company will not cover us out of Queensland so can you please assist us with your options.

Hi Des and Lynley
I am with GIO insurance, they are happy to insure Australia wide including Tasmania however I have not had a claim yet.
My advice is to shop around for national companies
Good Luck
Graham

My understanding with RACQ Insurance is that if you have current insurance policies with them, they will cover you whilst travelling around Australia providing you maintain a residential address in QLD.  They will not take on new policy holders doing what you want to do as they are Qld based.  I believe this is a fairly unique situation, so you may be interested to ring the National Insurance Brokers Assoc (1800 004 306) and they could advise you on various insurers.  Personally I would not pay an Insurance Broker to arrange the insurance for me, but the Assoc may be able to guide you to an insurer.  I am with Budget Direct Insurance who are extremely competitive for over 40's, and have been more than efficient with the one claim I've had with them.  They will cover me whilst travelling around Australia, but I would advise you to mention this to any insurer before taking out their policy.

I'm with APIA... Can be a tad more expensive but their service is par excellence and they offer national coverage, I have had several claims and they are the most agressive that I have found in respect of chasing dodgy repairers and getting your claim resolved.... I had a fridge go on the fritz and a guy came to sort it and eventually took the fridge away for repairs then held me to ransom claiming more than the fridge was worth in his repair bill, APIA got involved and took him to Court, bought me a new fridge and made me very happy... Fair Trading meanwhile told me it was all my fault....
I'm prepared to pay a little bit more if I'm going to get decent service, though their caravan policy was cheaper and better (I've only had 3 claims on the Van policy).....
No good unless you are over 50 though, but then you should not be on this forum if you are a youngster..LOL
