Hi everyone.

I am a grey nomad, based in Perth, with a caravan, a 4WD, and a lust to hit the road.  But I am a little nervous of travelling alone.

Just wanted to let you know that I have started a Meetup Group called "Caravanning for Solo Ladies".

This is a group for solo ladies who enjoy caravanning/camper trailering/tenting, or would enjoy it if they were more confident in travelling alone. It is for those who are baulking at taking the big solo plunge. The idea is to go in convoy and watch each other's backs. If nervous of free camping alone it provides a safety valve. Travelling with other solos will ensure that we are much more secure. We're not aiming at living in each other's pockets; just ensuring that everyone travels safely and arrives at the destination in good shape. Socialisation is optional. Trips will be within WA and could be as short as long weekends or as long as it takes to go to some of our more distant towns and scenic spots. It's just a case of setting a destination and seeking interested fellow lady travellers.

For those who have not tried it before it will enable the less experienced to travel with some who are more experienced in order to learn on the go.

Further details can be obtained at www.meetup.com and searching for "Caravanning for Solo Ladies".

Hi all, I just recently bought an Adria Altea 552UP 20'6" caravan and am currently living in it in Fernvale QLD.

My first trip will be on late October going to a CMCA weeklong rally at Grafton's Jacaranda Festival.

Never done caravanning before so am a bit nervous but confident. :)

I am newly Solo so am looking forward to making new friends as I travel around Oz especially someone who plays cards!biggrin

Just wondering if there is a Solo group/chapter near to Fernvale that I could join?

Cheers,

Howard

Hi Kerrybee, Thanks for posting this. I've joined your site and written a short note on there but not sure if I posted it right. I'm in SW of WA but had to post as Bunbury since Google didn't recognise the name of my town. Hoping I can join you on some of your trips.  Newhorizons.

Hi Girls great to chat here! I'm the original gypsy, in my "Gypsy Lady" motor home and doing the solo right round trip this time. Left Brisbane in June and headed Nth to Cairns, Normanton, Cloncurry, Camooweal up to Darwin back to Katherine and across to WA, loved Kununurra, Lake Argyle and the Bungle Bungles, Broome, Horzontial Falls and now I'm in Monkey Mia. Going so good hoping to met more travellers. I'm a bit of a book reader and not a get out there kinda girl, so gotta learn to be more social! There's a great apps I have on my iPad "trackmytour" just add to it each stop with photos and comments it's a great journal of my journey! Have you heard of it? Anyway hope to met more of you "out there" solos. travel safe GypsyLynda.

Hi Lynda, I don't live in Perth and rarely go there esp. in school hols. (not a city person). I live in the SW and we could meet up if you come down this way. Did you know there is a private messaging thing you can use if you want to speak to someone on here. If you click on your own name and go to your page, there is a thing in the lh corner. Try it out...this site is full of nooks and crannies and i'm still finding them.

Any one coming down the coast heading to Perth from Gero/Jurien/ we live near Seabird and you are most welcome to call in for a cuppa/meal or stay a night or three. We host a get together here, generally around the WA long weekend at the end Sept/early Oct but you are all welcome to call in anytime. Newbies looking for somewhere to practice parking, reversing etc come on up too. Have a couple of acres where you cant hit anything and damage your van!!

Hello there,

Although I joined a while ago, I have only recently had the time to seriously read a lot of the posts.

It is most enjoyable to hear about the trials and tribulations of other nomads.  For myself, this year I have been grounded for a few months.

It was my misfortune to purchase a vehicle that was made in the US so getting parts takes time. Then they get lost in transit etc etc.

So that is why I have been able to enjoy this great site.

Thanks for providing a place for us grey nomads to chat and exchange ideas and stories etc.

Regards

Lanock.

YES! I am one! Ive never let the fact that Im a woman or the fact that Im happily solo deter me from anything! It seems weird to me that the most common question I get from surprised other women is you do this by yourself! Arent you ever afraid? Truly Im more afraid to get on a plane than to drive across country solo! (But Im not really afraid to get on a plane either, to be honest!) Go forth with confidence I say! People are nice. Australia is beautiful. Trust in the goodness of most humans and listen to your gut instincts, youll know when a situation doesnt feel right for any reason. Like today, I stopped at a desolate rest area and not long after a truck pulled in and two guys got out obviously needing to use the loo too. I had my phone on me so as soon as I was done and saw them pull in, I FaceTime called a male friend and was chatting to him as I walked back to my car. Now, these guys were probably completely harmless but it was just a little precaution just in case. I wasnt afraid, I warned them that the loo flush wasnt working and that it was a bit gross and confidently walked on. Easy!

I have been a solo traveller for past 20 years as my wife wont fly or cruise. We did have a caravan for a while and saw a great deal of my state but were forced to sell it when we struggled financially paying to get our only son a commercial pilot's licence.

Hi Everyone. I am 66 yo single female ready for adventure. Finishing up working this yr & looking fwd to setting up 4x4 for camping & touring Oz. Luckily I have a capable son already experienced who is helping me, with small steps rgd the vehicle. Propose buying new single cabin 4x4 & setting up camping on the back as I don't want to be towing anything. Also need to be able to take the shell off at home in between trips. Any hints would be appreciated & not hitting the road until next yr after a few practice goes & working in with the seasons. Hunty

Hunty, I note you are in the Hunter Valley, there are many drives and places of interest to practice on within a stone's throw - I do suggest though, unless you specifically want to go off the beaten track you consider a less expensive unit than a four wheel drive and fitting a unit on back - and go for a single unit camper van.
