Knocked me down flat yesterday with aload of nonesense given to me from an Inspector at the Adelaide Government Vehicle Assesment Garage.
Here in this backwards state anything which is legal in any other state of this nation becomes illegal here.
I purchased a Campervan from Sydney, drove it home with the biggest grin on my face ever..only to have it rapidly removed by the inspection station for re-registering and interstate vehicle in South Australia.
This campervan, several years old and having travelled many kilometres is illegal in SA because the window tint is not allowed due to some desk wollaper's reckoning that it is too dark. OK legistion for left & right front windows has to have a luminous transmittance of atleast 75%..OK, I can live with that and was willing to remove the offending tint film.  BUT..was then instructed to remove the tint from the rest of the vehicles 5 windows. A lovely dark tint to retain privacy and comfort in the living area of the campervan, but still light enought to enjoy the views passing by on the road.
Reason being..wait for this.. If I was travelling at night and another vehicle at an intersection ie T junction could be misled of it's association on the road because the driver might see his own headlights reflected back and think it is a thru continuation road and not a T junction...????????????????????????

And..when the conversion from commercial to campervan, a bench seat was suppled and installed to Australian Design Rules No._______ and fitted with seat belts and was legal all them years on the road, except here in SA.  I am once again under instruction to get an engineers report for acceptance in good ole SA.
So..as you may guess by my ranting in here that I am unhappy.
BUT..imported European prestige vehicles with 'Privacy Glass'  ie, tint is in the glass during manufacturing is allowed by ADR regulations, but the likes of 'Tom Dick or Harry' who apply an aftermarket tint  of less intensity is penalised and liable to a Fine and Unroad worthy notice applied to the offending vehicle by the police.
But, any interstate vehicle with aftermarket tint is allowed here, just so long as you don't try to get SA registration.  But again..we are allowed up to 30 days after an interstate vehicle purchase before mandatory registration is ruled in.
Heck...one campervan turning sour rapidly.

well thats a new one on me, I was told by a tint installer (serges crash repair) that I could have my rear windows tinted to total blackout if I so desired, the only ones that could not be is the front two

mate beaurocracy gone mad, is all I can say as far as the seat is concerned

never mind chin up, chest out, forward we march into total insanity!!!!

Worth a second run, ask for a second opinion or further determination of the rules  about the tint.  I was always lead to believe that so long as the drivers window and front passengers window meet the standard the rest could be painted out , they do it to food del vans , mortuary  and  ambulances , livestock carriers.    What about reflectors on the side of the vehicle like they fit to train carriages  so you can see them crossing in the dark .  May be Mum will need to walk up front with a flag and a lantern.

There's a very strong argument for having road rules under commonwealth control  that would remove some of this crap they go one with, especially with drivers licences .
