Hello Dave

You sound just like my ex-wife! smile

Unfortunately I have been down with a serious attack of gout and was barely able to walk for two weeks.

I am now back to working on the van again.  This week I will be getting the solar panels fitted along with the batteries and elctrical goobledygook that goes with it.  The cabinets are in progress as well.

I haven't gotten around to putting my pics up on the web as yet but will do as soon as I can.  I had tried to attach some to this post but it took too long and then I lost all of what I had typed.  hmm

Cheers
Frank

Oh dear Frank, not the dreaded gout.... Hell as an ex sufferer I know what you have been going through.... I am on Allipurinol and I can eat what I want (maybe not such a good thing) now have not had an attack in 5 years.

no heart attack for five years Basil, must be a good thing, I had a stroke about that time, I was lucky it was one of the good ones, if there is such a thing, left me "unaffected" just a wake up call to slow down a bit, STUFF THAT, I'm as large as ever, slow down when I'm dead

I had a boss in the smelters who had the gout, mongrel b@%$## he was, even when he was well

G'day guys, thanks for your concern.

I believe I am on the right side of the gout now, just got me fingers crossed I don't get another attack.  I believe what caused it was beer and red wine.  To make things worse I can't take any medication for the gout because of the other medication I am presently on.  I had a heart attack and stroke 8 year ago.

My philosophy is never let a thing with no brains beat ya!

Thanks again guys.

Cheers
Frank

Maybe this should be in the Mens Health thread, but Women do get gout as well......
Gout is caused by high levels of uric acid in the blood. In fact, uric acid is a waste product caused by the breakdown of purines which are naturally found in your body.

As the uric acid builds in the blood, certain parts of your body may begin to experience pain. The pain caused by gout is a result of crystal-like formations that travel with the blood stream and end up depositing themselves in the spaces between the joints. It is these jagged crystals that are the actual cause of the swelling, redness and pain that gout is known for. The pain is a bit like someone holding a red hot poker on the joint, far worse that ordinary arthritis.

Foods You Should Avoid

High purines foods should avoided since purines contribute to the gout. Examples of high purines food include peas, beans, liver, brain, herring, scallops, muscles, mackerel, anchovies hard cheeses and herring.

In addition, to avoiding the foods listed above, I have included some dietary recommendations to lower the risk of gout naturally:

1. Avoiding alcohol or only drink in moderation. Drinking a large amounts of alcohol increases the risk of hyperuricemia, as the alcohol may hamper the natural removal of uric acids from the body.
2. Drink plenty of fluids to flush the system of uric acids. Try to consumer 6-8 glasses of water a day. A simple way to ensure you drink your daily water amount is to carry a sport bottle with you while at home or work.
3. Maintain a healthy weight, easy for me to say but when I lost 20kg it did help me. Excess weight places more stress on both your body system and your joints. The more stress that is placed on your joints the great the possibility you may experience a flare up.
4. Eat uric acid reducing foods. For example, tart cherries help to reduce uric acid in the body and dissolve the jagged crystals that form in the joints. However, due to the seasonality of fresh tart cherries, you may want to consider tart cherry juice concentrate and tart cherry capsules which you can get at most Health food shops. Safe for those on medication and a natural remedy that does work but like all herbal things may take a month or so to kick in.
You Should Incorporate Into Your Diet.

Food that are low in purines can help to control gout flare ups. Listed below are some foods low in purines for each meal of the day.
1. Breakfast - Cereals, coffee, oatmeal, tea, eggs, juices, milk fruits, cheese (low fat) and peanut butter.
2. Lunch - Pasta, cream style soups, gelatin, soda and broths
3. Dinner - Macaroni, eggs, vegetables, breads, cereals, low-fat cheeses and soups.

In addition to low purines foods, you can also incorporate medium purines level foods in moderation to round out your daily diet. These include beef, pork, lamb, mushrooms, asparagus, wheat germ, cauliflower and spinach.

The key to eliminating gout is enjoying food in moderation. Even foods that are high in purines can be enjoyed occasionally and in moderation. Of, if you have gout or are having gout attack you should avoid food high in purines and eat low purines and foods that fight gout including tart cherries, tart cherry juice concentrate and tart cherry capsules.
