So I'm driving home from a luncheon engagement today at around 60km/ph the limit.... I'm overtaken by a woman at very high speed and it's pouring rain visibility is about 100 - 150 metres..... She loses control, the car does some amazing par de der from some automotive ballet I have not seen and she ends up nose in a ditch at the side of the road. Missed me by "that much" and by sheer luck missed another car coming the other way by not much..... Not having a dig at women drivers, but her reason for this was that she had been out to lunch with the girls and had to pick up her kiddies from school and was running late. I found this out because I stopped to see if I could help and got a tirade of drunken abuse..... What would you have done? Hey I've set up a poll and will give you my answer when the results are in.

Looks like most of you are taking a "zero tolerance approach".... Is this wise?

I think a zero tolerence response is warranted for a short term, a "shock" if you will, just to curtail the hooliganism that is rampant on our roads today, then when they learn that the highways and biways are not their plaything and that they must obey road laws and share the same as anybody else then and only then do we relax, become a bit more leniant and maybe consider sexual favours, if only in our dreams,
but I am a perponent of capital punishment and heavy sentences for serious offenders, do not list me in the goody two shoes brigade, the whole defence of a broken home would go out the window with me and a druggie, child molester, murderer, drug lord, rapist, terrorist would face the hangmans noose with me, and be placed in a cell overlooking the hangmans square as well, so everyday he is waiting would be a torment, lesser offenders would face the cat of nine tails and port arthur would be re-opened and all its old ways revisited,
a dole bludger would be given 3 months leeway and if he/she hasnt gained a position in that time then he/she would be taken to a place of employment (doesnt matter where it is) and not given further help, I travelled for hundreds of kilometres sometimes, chasing the bulldozers and big machinery that was my choice of employment, these mongrels wont go down the road for a job,
we have currently 1.5 million "people" who are "out of work" or dont have full time work, (this is according to the latest morgan poll) I have three of the bludging mongrels on my street, I see them when I knock off work, never when I am going to work, they help no-one and only take what society hands out to them, I have offered them work, concreting with me or out on the tractor, on the farm putting up fences, but no they shy well away from that, I really feel like "dobbing" them in to the welfare for refusing work
I have no tolerance for serious law breakers and very little for minor infringements, and less for bludgers, in over 35 years of driving I have had two driving offences one for going through a red light (that was orange at the time but I wore it). and the other for exceeding 80 kms in an 80km zone that one I will own up to (83kms), I was talking to the dragon and didnt notice the change in speed, the bloody copper was just past the sign, I am not a perfect driver, I occasionally stretch the law myself but not to the extent that people are getting away with it these days and as often
but as always the answer is simple, more cops on the road and more stringent infringements

It's not just their offence and breach of the law which concerns me. It's their impact on other motorists. When they come unstuck they usually take someone else with them. The infringer walks away, and the victim suffers or worse. We all have to be accountable, and treat others as we want to be treated.

G'day, I couldn't agree more Dave, it seems today nobody wants to take responsibility for their own actions, I.M.O all the bleeding hearts and do gooders should be put on an island together and left to get on with it.

good on yer Daveo6 my son was on the recieving end of one of those idiots you refer too, Can I help you in opening up Port Arthur, I.ll drive the dozer to clear your path if neccessary mike and Judy enjoy your sunrises
unfortunately we are the silent majority and until we become the vocal majority things will never change, I have freinds who have had relatives and children killed maimed and injured through idiot drivers, and when brought to what we laughingly call "justice" the same tail ensues, "oh the poor chappie had a broken home and he has an illness"
how can being addicted to drugs and then robbing and stealing to fund that addiction be an illness, I have a cure for that illness its called solitary confinement, until such time as he/she is cured, and if he/she goes back to that life upon release well thats where port arthur comes into its own, 6 months there and I bet they would change their thinking, it is after all a choice, we choose to take the drug we choose to speed we choose to kill, mankind must take some of these "choices" away from those who dont know how to make the right choices
I cant understand why a person would stay in a city if he/she cant afford to live there if there is a better life elsewhere why dont they chase it
I'll get off my soapbox now but as you can see this is a subject that hits a raw nerve everytime

I was going to refrain till the poll closed..... Yes look it gets up my nose that those in society who CHOOSE to indulge in anti social behavior, i.e drugs, excessive alchohol etc seem to have the rest of us at a disadvantage. If the money that was spent (wasted) on these types was put into the hospital and education systems ( if it was not then wasted by beaureaucrats) life for the majority would be much better. Recently I was with another Veteran who I took to se a Dr..... waiting waiting waiting..... Turned out that the Medical centre was caring for some drug addict that had run amok....meanwhile the rest of us had to wait, and wait, and wait.... My solution, call the police have them removed from the premises charged and gaoled... Solitary would do the trick, they would either recover or cark it either way the problem would be solved. Another instance where the anti socially inclined were winners was in the case of Diabetics who had to pay for their syringes while the drug addicts were supplied free....
UNTIL SUCH TIMES AS WE DECIDE ENOUGH IS ENOUGH & DO SOMETHING the situation will continue as it is at the moment... I have decided to have my own zero tolerance policy, it is already giving the APF the irates however as I told the desk Seargeant at my local station that they seem powerless that somone had to dob in the idiots doing stupid things on the road. It takes some gumption and I have to be prepared for some backlash. I told the Cop that I'd happly be prepared to appear in court if it got rid of one fool on the road or had the potential to save a life......
This driver that caused this problem has been charged with DUI, Resist arrest, obscene language directed at Police, Unsafe driving, neglegent driving. The Police told me that with a good lawyer she will get off with a fine if it is the 1st offence, if she has a record of such behavior she may loose her licence BUT because she has children a magistrate would take her excuse into consideration.....

as I say Basil the majority of us stay silent, but there will come a day!!!
