RE: Skype or Paltalk

Hi Dave,

best way is to buy a webcam. Mine cost about $20 on special at Dick Smiths. You can get them anywhere at a range of prices.

Mine just clips on top of my lap top. It has a built in mike and the speaker on the laptop. I bought a different model to send to the grand kids that just sits on top of the PC monitor. We also used these at work for long distance meetings. also has the ability to conference calls. Havent tried this yet but will do so when next travelling and want to get all the family at the same time.

I love using skype, just wish more of my freinds had webcams. Ill convert them all one day.

cheers

Hi Dave, I thought I answered your query but as its not there today, I must have hit the wrong button. anyway, just buy a webcam from any of the usual stores. It has a built in mike and you hear through you computer speakers. I saw one in Hardley Normals catalogue for about $10 after their cash back offer.
Happy chatting

"Basil will know about this" says Dave..... Basil knows that Skype and all the VOIP phone thingys are the preferred means of communication between the various criminal elements in society because they believed that VOIP was immune to tapping or eavesdropping by those interested in stopping such activities but thats not the case.
Anyway I don't use it I have a hearing impediment and the quality of the audio makes it hard for me to use. Besides I don't want ASIO knowing that I am the Mr Big in potted tomato plant growing or that I'm going to make my own Bio Diesel and not pay tax on it.....

As a computer geek I may be able to offer some insight into this.

Skype: Commonly used for PC to PC phone calls, you can (I believe) also make outbound calls to a terrestial PSTN network as well, but I have a feeling this capability is limited to North America.

This is just yet another VOiP network (Voice Over Internet Protocol), I once signed up for it, the software is bulky, not very nice to use (my personal thought). And really not worth the effort, see additional notes below.

Paltalk: Well, it offers chat rooms, and you have three levels of membership.
Basic - Which is free, limited video in chat room, you see around 7 seconds worth, but in private message there is no limitation.
Extreme - Costs around 70 bucks Aus a year, gives you unlimited video and cams etc etc
Theres a higher level which is a toss and not worth the money.

I think Skype may also have chat rooms, although don't quote me on that, either way 99% of chatrooms are full of drongos and perverts, or people whose sole existence revolves around the chatroom and the people in it.

Now, both of these are bandwidth killers, in that they consume copious amounts of data, if you are on wireless and paying by the meg, your going to be up for one hell of a bill at the end of the month. If your on a set plan, expect the above services to chew into your monthly meg allowance, and this is without even thinking of using or looking at webcams.
Paltalk is the worst offender, it sends/receives a lot of data even during normal use (without video/audio).

If your looking to stay in computer contact with a few people, I would strongly recommend MSN Live, or Google Talk, the later is a nice small program made by google, there are two versions, the talk and the video version. I use Talk and its great, just signup for a gmail account and download google talk and your in business.

Gmail: www.gmail.com
Google Talk: www.google.com/talk

Ah Bazza, I can deal with the age thing, thats no issue.
But chatrooms, honestly it makes watching days of our lives exciting!

Same crap over n over, you can go to a chatroom and come back to it in a year and they are still whining about the same old stuff, same old drama only thing that changes is their names now and then.

Oddly enough, chatrooms hold the miracle key to eternal life!
I've lost count of how many people on chatrooms I've seen keel over only to be reincarnated with a new name hehehehe.

Yeah, I never had much luck trying to convince 20 yo bimbos to meet me in chat rooms, maybe they could tel from my chat that I had a modicum of intelligence and that is not a good thing in Chat rooms.....

Hehehehe you deviant... Never worked for me either :p
Sad part is, most of these people in chat rooms are predominately 30+ in age carrying on like imbeciles, and really should know better.

Some words of advice I can give to anyone who ventures into chat rooms:
1. Don't let it rule your life, its text on a screen, nothing more!
2. Don't become involved in others life battles and dramas, most of the people in chatrooms are there for one reason, themselves. And they feed off the unsuspecting soul.
3. There are some in chatrooms who delight in torturing others anyway they can, and if they can't screw info out of you, they will make it up, and as they are the 'regs' what they say is gospel, such is the prevalent mentality in chatrooms.

So still interested lol?

I know a person who spends the bulk of their waking day in a chat room, and they 'fret' if they have to leave the house for the day and their room won't be open. Things are pretty stuffed when the only thing in your life that provides you with some form of satisfaction and self-importance revolve around a chat.

Granted there are people with severe disabilities who due to their disability can't leave the house, or get limited opportunity to do so, thats a different thing, its there pipeline to the outside world and social interaction.
