In theory they should work just like a composting loo, the O2 does the work but if you don't open the blade and no fresh air with the O2 I'm not sure.... I figure a rummage round in my workshop should find me a fan, some PVC plumbing fittings to fabricate some of the bits and some sullage hose, activted chacoal filters are available at aquarium supplies all up if I spent $50 I'd be ahead.... I'll start tomorrow but I am taking Gracie for a trip on the local Tin Hare in the morning.

Ok here are the bits and pieces.... self explanitory though it will become clearer when the parts are assembled, the fan will be mounted within the door, the vent will be on the outside, the PVC Fittings will make up the interior cover for the fan and the actiaved charcoal filter, not shown, will be behind the vent...Not much space in there but only tricky bit I can see at this stage is mounting the micro switch so that when the blade is opened the switch turns on the fan.
Will it work???? Of course - the main consideration was that it could not have too much suction as a downward beeze may not be cumfortable for some users.
Maybe I'll market it under the name "the Faulty Eco Crapper"

All done and it does work clearly it can be seen from the burning incence stick that when the blade is open the smoke is drawn into the cassette. Not sure if the reality will be as claimed ie the O2 breaks down the waste but if the smoke goes down then so will the smell so no chemicals would be needed. I don't know how long the charcoal filters will last but for $10 you get enough material to make a dozen or so. Tricky getting the micro switch in the right place as I had to work using a mirror and unless you're a dentist working upside down and back the front never comes easy....
Am I glad I made my own, hell yeah, it was fun.
pics attached happy to answer questions..... And yes I washed my hands both before and after then I lined up all the tools counted them and washed my hands again....

tell me Basil is that incense stick going to be in the way when one carries out ones ablutions, not sure of the safety aspect of that one, may be a warm reception, and who is going to keep on relighting the thing, may prove to be a bigger ponderance than the whole leaving the toilet seat up/down debarcle

so when one is on the "toot" so to speak is any innocent passerby going to be dealt a cruel and unexpected blow from your contrivence!!!

but a jolly spiffing job and a big "WELL DONE" to "that man"

No the incense stick is only to conceal the smell of the controlled substance I must have been on, not there when in use. I only have one problem now, I need vollunteers to test it as me being such a cultured and psudo sophisticated person my whoopsies don't smell just like Rudds & Howards dont smell....
The thought did x my mind that those outside may not find this at all pleasant, but then I thought what a good idea to keep the site beside me free for Gracie to foul....

HAH!!! HAH!!! HAH!! good idea, keep the sites all to yourself, I wonder how c/park managment would set about evicting you because of onerous odours wafting precariously through the pleasant acres, would be a good conversation to just "overhear"

We went to Merimbula as sort of a celebration over the weekend and the fan thing worked a treat. I did not tell Sybil that I was making the changes as she usually whinges about smells coming form the loo but with this thing working there was not a whiff of anything unpleasant. Not sure that the matter broke down as it really didn't have time to but there were no smells inside or out and no chemicals used. I'd give it full marks but I think I'd redesign it if I make another. I'd dispense with the duckted fan and simply go around the inside of the Thetford with silicaone to make it reasonably air tight and just put a fan in the door with the filter because when you slide in the Cassete the valve on the top is opened and when the fan is on the natural airpath would be down the shute, out the valve and out the fan....

Basil,
Quite the inventor/innovator aren't you!!
Just found this thread as we were away when it started. You have done a great job to research and modify to your requirements.
I think you have a winner here, hopefully make you some extra money!!!!
However, from a Marketing perspective.......I think anything that has "Faulty" as part of the product name may have some difficulties at the initial product launch.....nononodisbeliefnonono.....LOL

Let's try and find a new product name...........

Speaking of blasts from the past, I think I've seen that blue van up north just recently. Brought back a couple of memories of a long time ago on Nomads.
