Boy, there's a lot of Oz which doesn't have mobile access. I'm in Alcie Springs, today and this is the first time I've had coverage since I left Renmark on March 3rd.

Iv'e been having a ball in the great outdoors and I will get my blog up-to-date in the next couple of days. It'll probably take me that long to read all the posts that have been posted since I fell off the face of the earth.

I'm in the Alice Springs Heritage & Tourist Centre (what a mouthfull) just outside the Gap. I originally booked into the Wintersun, because I'm a Top Tourist member and get a discount, but I'm having a small problem with the van and Heritage are the local Jayco warranty agents. I'm booked in for 7 nights, so I joined up to their chain and got 10% off (cost 16.50 - saved 19.60 so I'm ahead.

No, the foto on the avatar is a free camp in the Bodalla State Forest just north of Narooma on the NSW south coast. I'll send you a picture of this one in a day or two

Mike,
Isn't the South Coast of NSW - particularly around Narooma, the greatest?
We travelled through there 18 months ago before we bought the van and had a great time. We intend to go back with the van and enjoy ourselves even more. Another area we liked was Moruya. We stayed in a cabin in the cara park north?? of the river. Great spot.

I thought the NSW south coast was great, once you get south of Kiama, especially compared to the north coast which SUCKS. It's damn near built up all the way from the Gold Coast to Syddley. I remember places like Murwillumbah and Lennox head from many many years ago when the area was virtually bush, but there are resorts and retirement villages from one end to the other these days.

Only problem I have with the south coast is that the NSW Parks and Wildlife charge like wounded bulls for access to the parks. I went in to look at the Boyd Tower and had to pay $7.50 to walk 200 metres, and at Bermagui, the info centre told me about this "beaut" camping area at some beach or other, I forget the name, something like Gilligan's beach. I got there after driving 15 Km along a rotten road to find plenty of campsites, no facilities whatsoever, not even toilets and they wanted $10 a night to stay there. Needless to say I choofed off.

Places like the Eurobodalla and the area between Eden and the border were wonderful.

A quick question if I may Mike 47 - doing along trip as you are, do you get tired of putting the top up and down so often? Is it heavy? Also how much room do you have for storage?

G'Day Annie,

I had a Penguin and found it the best thing since sliced bread. It was 6 years ago that the Penguin and I parted company as along came two shepherd dogs. If it had not been for the dogs I can well assure you that I would still have the Penguin and be travelling very happily indeed. The winding up of the tent section and roof is very very easy indeed. You would have no problems. The top half of the door which attaches the ceiling of the Penguin is also very easy to manage. Piece of cake.

Great little Camper and I personally loved it. Would have no hesitation in going back to same and as mine was 6 years old I know they have since improved on them. What a great way to travel and see this fantastic country. Ibbo would also vouch for this smile.gif

We have jus returned from a trp down the south coast of NSW.
Loved The Eurobodalla coast!!
Would love to go back and spend more time there.
Thinking of trading in the soft-floor camper trailer for a van! smile

Thanks for the info re the Penguin.

But Sgnt. do dogs and Penguins not go together? Or just not enough room in the Penguin for 2 x Hairy Mammoths (GSD's)?

...and storage, is there enough? I will be on the road for quite a while I hope!

Annie,

If your whippet sleeps on the bed with you, there will be plenty of room for you all.

The GSDs on the other hand are just a bit too big.  Your lab would have no problems in laying down on his bed on the floor. 

The penguin I had, did not have a boot, however the newer ones do so this gives you some added storage space.   I believe that if you travel light, the penguin will have more than enough room.

Darn it,

The best thing to do would be to have a look at a Penguin if possible and see for yourself.

I always take the two dog beds with me when looking at a new van and if the dog beds fit on the floor of the Van I am looking at, it is in the market smile.gif

Good luck with whatever you end up purchasing.  The penguin is also a treat to tow.  You do not know it is even there behind you.
