A question for the anglers out there. As im a complete novice on ocean shore/jetty fishing if there are any clues for me. firstly im taking a surf rod (ive never used one)and a stream ,trout ect type rod. i will have the right tackle as s/inlaw has plenty. its more on bait as i will be hopefully fishing the SA/WA coast any clues or a good site online would be welcome.
My advice is to use fresh bait. Still kicking or swimming.
In Queensland we use beach worms, pippis or freshly caught prawns. Each of them requires either further equipment or knowledge on how to acquire them. But such fresh bait is always good for catch/feed of fish.
Frozen/packet or cured bait is nowhere near as successful.

when on the west coast (and cheryl is far more knowledgeable on this than I) grab a sand worm pump and suck fresh bait straight out of the tide line, this is the best bait ( I think) for the big salmon and kidney slapping king george whiting, nothing like the sooky little things you get on the east coast, use a red bead just above your hook, they love the color red for reasons better known to themselves
here be "beastys"
if you wander in to a ****le bed then grab a heap of those as well they are nearly as good
also while you are wandering around just keep an eye out for the razorfish, razor sharp half moon shaped shell protruding out of the mud, rip them up and enjoy them as well, dont step on them or they will slice you to the bone, old sandshoes are the go here
go out at night in the shallows with a spotlight and dab garfish and flathead
dont forget our big delicious blue swimmer crabs, easily caught with a dab net and a baby bath towed behind you, or the usual net with bait, also our squid which are fantastic on the barbie, the big schnapper are regularly caught off the end of the longer jettys and they love live bait
grab a "bait net" and catch a few and try your luck with them, you may even strike a big yellowtail or a big tuna if you are over lincoln/ceduna way
all bait for all fishies are within easy reach given the right equipment and mindset, good luck with your fishing

Jeez Dave, Now you've gone and made me homesick. Pilchards for tuna bait. Bait or food, some species are deliciously both. It's all good. And for god's sake eat the garfish. Up in the tropics they're used for bait for bill fish. What sacrilege! Butterflied, fried in butter........ oooh......... yum. I have daughters at Edithburgh and Lincoln. Talk about being spoilt for choice. And no other place in Australia has blue swimmer (manna) crabs as big as SA. Oh, Dave, bring on those blue crabs! Oh, don't worry - - I'll go and have a lie down. I'm sure it will pass. Mmm ........ Chris

cant get enough of them granny, I only have to take a 5 minute walk and I'm fishing off the jetty catching great swags of them,
the only problem is the size do I keep the ones that are three times as big as the legal limit or the ones that are only twice the legL size, yep pilchards if you can get them but they reckon they are about $15 for enough to go fishing now

Ahhhhhh that sort of angling I thought more the Arthur Daly type angling. Though I have tackle in my van I rarely use it as I think there is too much water between the fish.
