Do you think we could have a gardening thread please Cindy.
I just bet there are a lot of green thumbs in this forum. I believe I have a purple thumb, as my local nursery told me. She just loves to see me walk through her gate. She actually rubs her hands together and says, "What have you killed now Mon" . So as you can imagine some good advice would be appreciated.
I am always amused by Gardeners. On our local radio we have a gardening "show" every Sat Morning and it amazes me that people who ring up to get advice but end up simply wanting the time to aire their knowledge. Except one elderly man who's daughter had given him a "Potato Vine" and he had never had any potatoes on it..... I'm not sure that this forum is the place for a gardening sub forum, it's getting out of hand, next I'll be agitating for a Veterans Forum, a "Retired spooks forum", a Fishing forum, a railway moddllers forum, a self sufficiency forum and a forum for GN couples - well why not the Solos have a forum?
Fortunatley it's not my forum so I should just shut up and leave it to beaver errr Cindy...

Basil, A "Retired Spooks Forum" would be pretty quiet I should imagine.

Gardening? Gardening? Nomads should be too busy nomading to garden. I know I am, and I miss it like hell. I've successfuly vege gardened in Ceduna, making gardening in the Kimberleys a piece of cake. In fact I used to think it was cheating. Just plant and water, and voila! Seeds germinate in 3 days, and cuttings bud in a week. Too easy. So while I miss the gardening, planning, planting, pruning and reticulation design, as a nomad, there is just no garden to garden. Besides, the bush and rainforest will do me. I can enjoy it without the work. Someone out there really knows how to grow things. Cheers Chris

G'day Chris,
Please tell my darling wife that, she wants to carry pot plants in the van. No not that type of pot.

Tell me I didn't read that one correctly. Flower pots in the Van???? Oh No, what next.
Sorry, couldn't help myself. Its just that I had not heard that one before. Its a joke right?
And I agree with Chris, Too busy Nomading to have a garden. Forget about the Gardens, get in the Van and go enjoy yourself.
Take care out there
G'day Sarge,
Not so much a joke pal, her suggestion was to carry one or two pots to grow fresh herbs, I think I have talked her out of it. My suggestion that there was only sufficient room for her or the pot plants, I think she got the message.
John

Oh, to grow my own herbs. Nice thought in my little ideal world. Not a snowball's hope in hell will you get past the border fruit fly checks if you're planning to travel interstate. You wouldn't get them over the border into SA or WA, and in parts of the Riverland. Honey and almonds are treated with the same fear of inflicting bugs and diseases into their agricultural and horticultoral industries. If you really HAVE to have some plant life in the caravan, it will have to be artificial I'm afraid. While you stay in the one state you'll be okay with floral arrangements. The "other" pot plants you alluded to could top up the fuel fund as long as you only grow 1 - well, in SA anyway. An on-the-spot fine and no conviction there. Good luck with that. You will also have to leave the pet goat, pig or sheep home too. The puppy, bird or cat can stay. Grow in peace. Cheers Granny

Gardeners are also very imaginative. A guy I know who is a member of the men in BLUE tells an interesting story about a young couple who took an older 30' caravan to the local "long Stay" park and then paid upfront for 6 months and were seen only occasionaly even though the van was connected up to water and power..... Time passed and the owner became suspicious as there always appeared to be a strong light showing through the curtains. Police enetred the van and found a hydroponics set up with 100 plants just about ready to harvest.... One way to pay for your travels I guess, just don't get caught.

Have to say yes there are several gardening forums out there...two which spring to mind...gardenexpress & ozgrow. Having said that my main hobby is exactly that gardening & I like to think I can share it with my other hobby "holidaying"...does make it a little difficult though when going for extended periods but am lucky enough that I have someone who enjoys my garden & so will take care of the watering if need be.
Can also relate to "taking a pot" I have on a few occasions had sml planters with me with lettuce; herbs etc growing & it has proven to be a good move....nothing nicer than a few fresh lettuce leaves.
Just to prove that its not all about me I actually share the garden with DH...check out his website if you are interested in railways. LOL

BTW countdown on now for our trip up the Centre (3 sleeps left)

Thats what I like to hear is a man that has a bit of authority and can put his foot down (pst, can you tell me how to do it). And you mean to say your better half actually listened to you? Good for you.
Think I would have been sticking my heels in on that one too. Pat on the back to you John.
Basil, its a wonder that the owner and inhabitants of the CP did not get the sweet pungant smell emminating from the Van. They must have been having a puff on the odd occassion.
Have had to burn a few crops of the stuff and swear I got high just standing down wind of it
Have a great day

I owned a motel once in a previous life. Did some of the cleaning as well. Had some very notable "guests" over the Friday and Saturday nights. Went into clean the room on Sunday morning and came out giggle giggle giggle. Now I wonder what that could have been??? LOL

G'day Sarg,
Irona just looked at me the way women do, smiled and said I'm a better cook than you.
She now agrees she would have a lot of trouble getting the plants passed the ag. check so for once she has bowed to my better judgement, by God I am going to put a big red cross on the wall, "One for John"
With regard to the burning of the other kind of pot plant I believe over here in the West they were burning old tyres with it so the dope heads standing downwind on the other side of the river couldn't stand the smell and left the scene. However I cannot attest to the veracity of that as it is hearsay, told to me by a copper friend who was not above winding me up a bit.
