"Tisha" African for the "willful one" Full blood Basenji, a lot of my old dog Pixie, and at the moment the only diff is her longer legs and her youth, Shes is 12 mth old and as with all Basenji cannot bark but yodels, her size and temperament makes her an ideal companion for us when we go on the road again with the motor home or caravan Pixie attained several ribbons in obediance, with Tisha I,ll take her as she comes and watch for signs We picked her up in Charters Towers from Jenny and David, "The Palebushman" another Grey nomad and drove from there to home in Sapphire, Yodeling at full voice for about 15 minutes, and 20 minutes into the trip she escaped from her cage and spent the rest of the trip enforcing her way by sitting on Judys lap Stopped for a cuppa and while we were there a big Winnabago stopped with another two dogs, Avery fat 4 yr old heelr and a small sort of spaniel both very friendly and noisy, From a decent distance I asked if we could approach to socialize the dogs and with thier permission approched cautiusly Well "Tisha" hack;es went up from her bum to her neck and though she cannot bark she can certainly growl, and was prepared to take on both dogs to protect "her" pack, !2 month old and coming from kennels with very little contact with other "packs" she need socializing So I sat on the ground and talked and handled all three and at least we parted with a "see you on the road somewhere" Arrived home without further ado So a welcome mat is out for all GNs with dogs to help with her social life
A sweet companion. They are a beautiful dog who will return your affection and ask for nothing. My Basenji was with me for many a wonderful year, but she had 2 skills which I had no control over. 1. She could climb any type of fence, whether it be brick, timber or chain wire mesh. 2. Their breeding was as a hunting dog, and if mine did see anything move out in the paddock, she'd be off like a rocket, and no matter how much obedience training she would turn on her selective hearing and just concentrate totally on what she was after. A dangerous trait as they have no road sense.
But, all the same, I loved her heaps and she returned the same to me. Enjoy !
She's beautiful !!! Wanted one of them for years, as my grandmother gave me a book [Can't remember the title now] about one when I was about 8 years old. I'll come out with my "kids" to meet her in a few weeks.
What a stunning pet! She looks alive, alert and affectionate. No, I'm not getting a pet. No, I'm not getting a pet. No, I'm not getting a pet. I'll just enjoy my fellow nomads' pets and their antics. Please share. I think it's getting too hard to travel with a pet. Hard on the pet, and hard to get parks. No, I'm not getting a pet. No, I'm not getting a pet. No! Enjoy your new companion. Cheers Chris

Great looking dog.She will be a loyal friend and companion for both of you. Hope to see her one day. Hmm. if you place some saphire chips in the bottom of her food bowl, do you think, no probably not.

G'day Xina,
My memory is not what it used to be but could the book given to you by your Grandmother be "Jock of the Bushveld" if so I remember reading it as a kid in Zimbabwe and really enjoying it. John

Mike and Judy, I'll give you at least 2 weeks notice before I come this time.
John, no it wasn't that one. It was set in the Southen States in America. The Basenji was the pet of a young Boy. I'm not sure whether they found her or not, but she goes missing . They couldn't work out why she yodelled instead of howling or barking. I'll see if I can find the title.
Haven't found it yet, but I just remembered her name was Lady, and it was in the title.
Cheers, xina.

It was "Goodbye My Lady". Real tearjerker from memory. Apparently there was a movie too. Cheers, xina.
Thank you very much, I appreciate the effort. Will look for it at the local library and tell the wife to get another box of tissues ready, not ashamed to have a tear now and then.

Lovely looking pooch, I love the yodeling they do, perhaps there is a career here as a singing dog? I'm glad it's you doing the training, Basenjis are noted for their ability to not recall especially if there is something to chase or eat....

wonderful looking dog hope you all enjoy your times together. People think I`m crazy when on the road as although we don`t have a dog now (always had german shepherds) I still keep doggie treats in the van so that I can give them to travelling dogs. Helena
Bobtails Goana's, or Shingle Back Skinks or...........nope, can't think of the Latin name for them, Rugosa T.......never mind. Mum, Dad and two offspring at the moment.
We live in a Villa Unit, small caravan in the front yard with a removable fence panel to get it in and out............No Pets allowed under the Body Corporate rules........reason for the "Shssssh" (Don't tell anyone) although they are "silent" pets and don't annoy anyone.

Tisha update, What an intelligent little girl, has made friends with our neighbor's blue heeler, 4yr old "millie", had a lot of sniffs and general playing tag, she won't need too much socialising, also met a very overweight Staffie, again lots of sniffs and tail wagging, it is such a delight to watch, You could say that we are slightly besotted!!

Not sure abuot the "rules" where you live but I know for a fact that in the ACT the bodies corporate that used to be run by those who thought they were running the Nazi regime have had their wings cut severely regarding the self imposed rules on pets. May not apply in the state where you live but I know for fact that no longer can Bodies Corporate prevent you haveing a pet dog or cat.

Socialising is probably the most important factor, the last thing you need is an anti social dog while you are traveling, then again you don't want a dog that will jump into anyones car.
