computer gurus-help

I have just splashed out and bought my own laptop and I got hood winked into buying  the pre paid telstra mobile pre paid....and when on my computer it won't let me open up the forum and I am missing all my pals...
Anyone know what the problem is and how I can fix it?
Otherwise my chats will have to be limited to Libraries and internet cafes, boo hoo

Okkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk this sounds like a job for Computer Guru....
Not me unfortunatley but my advice would be to take your computer to the people who sold it to you, presumably a reputable retailer and tell them what the problem is and ask for it to be fixed, alternatley take it to a Telstra shop and enquire there.
Sounds like there maybe a software problem with perhaps the driver for the modem thingy....

Your questions raises more questions, so there is no immediate answer.

As Basil says, return it and have them look at it

To make a start on an answer, we would need to know
What it does now ie does it connect to the internet at all
What it will not do, ie is it just the forum
etc

If you cannot return it, then start by telling us more about the problem, type of MS windows you run, has it ever worked.

Annie;

There seems to be two seperate issues here, lets go for the easiest.

Forum - Have you used your computer on an Internet connection other then the wireless pre-paid, and if so can you access the forum?
You need to eliminate other issues before blaming the wireless etc, so firstly you need to use your computer on someone elses Internet to see if it still does the same thing.

If it does, first I would recommend unistalling the wireless modem software then trying again on anothers internet and see if all works as it should.

Regarding the 'pals' list what do you mean? Be a bit more specific.
MSN pals, Yahoo Pals, Pal tins hehe...

Also, when you try to access the forum via wireless what happens?
What message do you get in the browser?
These seemingly insignificant tidbits of info are a great help in solving the issue.

Also, keep in mind some ISP's block certain ports on Wireless which means some applications (programs) may not work.

Geez what a lot of info is available on this thing,
When I got my wireless modem it didnt work until it was registered on the pc with telstra, but I have an account and pay by phone each month,
The blue modem is not all its cracked up to be , my first one broke at the swivel and this one I am using at present is becoming fussy preferring one USB port to another, can someone explain that,
Intend to get it tested by Telstra whenever I decide to go to a city, will tolerate it till then

I agree with Twobob, there are so many factors,
there are also many options here.
I have so far resisted buying mobile technology modem using free wi fi hotspots.
These are available at Maca,s , starbucks etc and can also be found by adding Wifi points of interest to your GPS for Australia they can be found here under WiFi
http://www.gps-data-team.info/poi/australia/
Cant speak for other gps units but for tomtom just plug in your gps to you pc ,exit tomtom software and then open gps unit as you would a memory stick then locate your Australia map folder and copy in the poi,s for wifi.
You can then set the unit to notify you when near poi,s of interest.
you may have to open your browser and except there terms and download is limited
but its free.
I use with a gmail account which is set up for pop3 email and saves changing email if you change internet provider.
If you need a gmail account invite send me your present email address and I will send you an invite.

I too am on my second mobile wireless broadband card. The first one used to get so hot I couldn't touch it, and then it wouldn't communicate email or internet, until it was cooler.
It's been replaced, but this one also gets hot, but not so extreme.
It takes a while to connect sometimes, and then it doesn't diconnect sometimes.
I'm not sure if I should give the laptop the flotation test or the mobile card.
Technology is a wonderful thing - when it works!
I'm not really happy with my NEC laptop either, but I have to perservere due to budget issues. I have an account of 1GB per month. I won't do time because there are times when the clock is ticking over but I don't have a connection. So paying for space is the way to go for me at the moment.
I thought the prepaid mobile might have been the better way to go, but maybe not.
Keep asking questions. Keep doing your homework until it's really clear to you.
Cheers Chris

Right, yes I can get into internet no problem, I can get into most sites I want to, I cannot go from GN Home age to the forum though.

The pals I refer to are you all dear friends!

I will try using someone elses internet connection and see how that goes.

Annie
