WA travel warning

GNs planning a trip to northern WA, and who like a tipple: take supplies with you.
All takeaway sales were banned in Carnarvon on Friday for two Aboriginal funerals. The ban may be lifted today, but who knows?
And Roebourne council is voting today on a possible total and permanent ban on all alchohol sales.
These bans will spread as the gutless government fails to take any action on the underlying reason for the bans. Should do wonders for tourism!
And just to really cheer you up, it's bloody freezing in Carnarvon. Sunny and clear, but very cold.
Cheers, Tony

Thanks for the tip Tony, may be a sign of tougher measures to come. Hope your Flamingo is going well and you are enjoying your trip,
Vic

PS:  At one time I was a great sun lover, had a deep tan etc.  I went to Newman bottle shop to replenish supplies etc.  A lot of "locals" were sitting out the back of the shop on the grass.  I was unshaven, singlet and stubbie shorts and thongs.  The lady behind the counter told me I would have to come back later.  Before I could answer, my wife came in and spoke to me.  The lady looked at her, looked at me again, and said "Oh that's ok, what do you want".  Ha Ha, she told me they could only serve the "locals" at certain times and thought I was one of them.  Thank goodness I have lost my tan now (skin cancer catching up with me) and have improved my appearance so shouldn't have any more trouble getting "supplies". lol.

Thanks Tony...........

Here we go again............... Can't............ (or more to the point....not willing to) control the few so we make the majority suffer. And because we are who we are, we just sit back and take it.

I lived in Ceduna for eighteen years and we had the same thing happening constantly.

Won't be like this when the revolution comes. :)

As a matter of interest what do you see as the underlying cause that govt has failed to address

I'm not replying for Tony, just stating my take on the issue.

I reckon that deeply entrenched eurocentric racism is the real "****** in the woodpile", if you'll excuse the barbed pun.

Much exacerbated by the inability of most of the said racists to recognise themselves as being so.

(Ooopsie, the PC filter has invalidated my pun: but you'll all know what I mean.

What a ****-eyed world we live in. Oh Dear! That will be ****ed too, I guess.)

Rolly, I am just guessing, but I think Tony is saying that the Government thinks banning sales is going to solve the problem which will only go underground. I don't think he is being racist, only saying look for the underlying causes of the problem........but then does anyone know what to do without infringing on the rights we all have as citizens? Better education for the locals on drinking and it's health problems????? I think they have tried that haven' they, so short of going back to revoking drinking rights of Aboriginals entirely, what do you do?

I'd like to hear more from Tony also on what he thinks or meant.

You misunderstood me, Vic.
I was not inferring that Tony was being racist.
I meant to infer that there is systemic and endemic racism in our society.
The treatment of the late Mr. Ward being a classic, but far from isolated, example.

Sorry Rolly, yes there is a lot of racism in our society, coming from both sides of the fence, people will only get respect from others if they learn to tolerate each other and respect the differences.

Yes, Mr Ward's treatment was disgraceful and heads should roll, what a horrible death being cooked alive. I fully support the protesters on that one.

By the way, my first wife was Aboriginal and my four kids are part Aboriginal (and hard working high achievers).

I was living in Ceduna when they declared the entire townships of Ceduna and Thevenard "dry". It took the public drinking off the streets for everyone.
Port Lincoln followed in the public areas along the foreshore and other grog spots in the main part of the business district. It was successful in removing the bad behaviour, but it also deprived families from enjoying picnics etc along the foreshore.

The towns in northern WA all have a liquor accord of one type or another to stop the anti-social crap which accompanies drunkenness in the towns. The plan is to reduce the violence, the spouse abuse and road deaths.
Funerals bring outsiders into the town who may not be familiar with the local liquor laws, so the law is applied to everyone, even the tourists.
Surely you can forego some grog for a day, or plan ahead. Pubs and bottle shops usually display public notices of any change from usual business hours and trading practices.
Unfortunately it's a sign of the times, and we all have to conform to avoid the accusation of "discrimination". One law for all.
We know what the problem is, but it does also affect the non-indigenous section of the population.
All I can suggest is do your homework and plan ahead. Enjoy your stay. Cheers Chris

OK, I'm back after being out of Telstra range in a town 10km south of a major WA city (Geraldton).
And that lack of internet connection is a direct result of the actions of the Mexican we hired to run Telstra. He got $30 million and we got shafted.
And I'm sorry Chris, but it's not one law for everybody.
The whole point of this issue is this:
Aboriginals cannot handle alcohlolic drinks. We have all seen the results of free access.  (Free in that my taxes are paying for their drinks).
Because of this, white people are being denied the right to have a drink. This is what I object to.
We need to go back to the days where Aboriginals were not allowed to have access to alcohol.
If this is regarded as paternalistic, tough.
I am a native born Australian.
I am alarmed and disgusted by the billions of taxpayer dollars being poured down the bottomless drain of Aboriginal affairs to absolutely no result.
It's time we all stood up and demanded that Rudd The Dud and that dreadful Welshwoman do something about it.
We cannot let the existing situation continue. The alternatives are quite worrying.
Tony

We need to be very diplomatic here. Like I said previously, most of us do know what the problem is. The problem really is, everyone has to wear the consequences of the anti-social actions of the minority.

If I'm offered an employment opportunity to subsidise my disability benefits I would choose to audit the Ab Affairs Department, whatever it's called these days. It used to be ATSIC, but it became the subject of much cynicism, so they changed the department's name, spending millions changing the letterheads etc.

The other choice would be to audit Centrelink - "The Deparment of Anti-social Insecurity".

Controversial? You ain't seen nothing yet.
