Anyone had one of these

We are on the road now and before we left home we had a garage sale. It opened our eyes to how greedy humans can be. I have never experienced what material things mean to some people. They were like a pack of vultures (maybe that as a little harsh)but if this is what people are like I would prefer to have nothing. They pushed and shoved and even stole from us. Why??? Never mind we are so happy now and are fit and healthy so that is all that matters
Happy safe travels to all

Hi Chris and Robbie,

Yes I know EXACTLY what you mean and it seems those with a second hand shop are the worst.  They come way before the advertised time and try to knock the price down even if it's only 10 cents they want it for 5.

I have learnt by experience that material things don't mean anything when it comes down to it.  They can't compensate for good health.  Even the almight dollar pales into insignificance when faced with a terminal illness.  Money can't buy your health either.

Glad you are both happy and fit and enjoying your travels.  That's what life is all about...........get out there and enjoy while you have your health and each other.

Ma

Hi Ma,
Yes our happiness and health are so important. If you havent got that you have nothing, Hubbie had a health scare and lucky he is still here so we have been given a second chance and have taken it.My dear sister wasnt so lucky and she was only 50. I know other families go through the same thing and we just have to learn to cope.I think a wakeup call is not so bad sometimes as we then we learn how lucky we are to be alive. (Ps thank goodness we dont have to have another garage sale)
Happy Safe Travels

Was once in your shoes and in your sisters shoes too once upon a  life time ago.  Makes you appreciate what you have and you also realise what you can do without.  Make each day the first day of the rest of your life.

I dont know if I can bear a garage sale, I know I'm going to have to do it but I am absolutely dreading it, when madam seen the house well that was that, we are going and no more said

I've had a couple of scares myself and it kinda sharpens the "focus" of things that are important in life and none of them has anything to do with money or material wealth

I'm holding one of those main reasons for living right now, just gave her a bath, clean nappy, clean jim jams, smelling like a bought one, hair all brushed, belly full and a big burp, big grin, all is good with the world, big hug from my "daughter" from behind so I'm a happy chappy

thats whats important, not "stuff" I guess when all is said and done, still not going to be easy after 23 years here

hi folks ..

well, I've got one that just fits the mould .. as you might know, I've had a 'for-sale' sign out front in an open, unfenced yard ..

As my youngest lad is taking nearly all of my stuff to storage so he can move into a house himself shortly, I've not advertised or had any 'garage sales ..

I've had a couple actually pull up out front in small car with a trailer .. They knocked on the door .. I thought they might have had an interest in my house sale .. nope .. they asked when I was going to have a garage sale !! ..

Believe me .. I need to get out of here and get on the road !  One gets sick of the 'leeches'  !!

Now all doubt about my choice of lifestyle has gone.
The compact life without all the clutter.
Buy a house with all those rooms you have to fill up with furniture which you have to fill up with all that STUFF.
When you want to "rationalise" your lives you have to rid yourself of all that stuff in all that furniture in all those rooms.
Who were you pleasing? Who were you impressing? Were you happy?
All hypothetical questions, but just think about them.
The compact, uncluttered life for me wherever I'm parked. All good. Cheers Chris

Sounds good to me Christine, if I didn't have other committments I would be doing the same thing, so probably will never happen, at least for awhile.

Happy Travels and best wishes to you Chris & Robby as well once you get underway.

Good luck Jon, hope you are on the road soon, don't forget to let us see a pic of you new wheels on the site here.

Yes mate , I also know that feeling , like Chris, never again will I accumalate STUFF to the point that a garage sale is necessary, over the years I have downsized from a 4 bd to a 3 bed to a 2 bd, and each time I have carted all the STUFF with me, when it was due to get rid of it the vultures were at the door at 6 AM, even thought the ad said said 8
I had a Tassie oak dining suite valued at 2500 and eventuall sold it for 500
now I live comfortably on the edge of a society gone mad,, mind you all the GNs are welcome here but if they are expecting " flash," they will be disappointed,

Anyone is welcome at our place, mobile or other, at any time and take us as you find us.  We don't visit others for the "flashy" either Mike and Judy.  It's about the people not what they have or haven't got.  Friendship is something that money can't buy.

I once had to do an assignment at school about affluence and status.
The things people have to show the world who thay are and where they fit in society.
A creative letter box does it for me. A humble well-maintained home impresses me more than a mansion.
I just think about all the cleaning. Oh, I know, they'd have a cleaner. That would probably be me.
That Han**** woman in Perth in her castle certainly set the standard for foolishness in the name of image.
My dad was the other one. He had a bush camp set up with solar power where he used to live and gather more chatttels than were useful for anything. His other cottage in Swan Reach still had the clutter from the previous owners including the clothes, emply jam jars and linen.
Clutter? I'm cured. Cheers Chris

Yes oh yes..... the dreaded clearing sale..... had one about 6 weeks ago advertised as starting at 0900, had people banging on the door at 0600 and they became rude and offesnsive when I told them to go away and come back at 9.... I thought the indians would be the worst  but it was in fact the slavic types who were simply hideous, one bloke arrives at 8 and I ignored him and at 9 her just grabs stuff and fills a wheel barrow that was not for sale and shoves a $10 note at me and says OK... I had great fun in telling him the wheelbarrow was $100 and the contents were worth at least $400, didn't he chuck a spaz threatening me and carrying on until I told him to leave the premises, others were well behaved and otheres just were putting small things in their pockets. I had a plastic trunk full of plumbing fittings screwed brass mainly and this other slavic bloke tells me I'm robbing him because I asked him for scrap value....

The Gnome attended and of course was the perfect gentleman which was amazing as he is ex navy.....

As you've said it's the ones who are buying to resell that are the worst....

Fortunatley I just wanted to get rid of the stuff so I wasn't that concerned with the petty theft but the looks I got  when I said that stealing was not a nice thing to do....

So there was some stuff that we kept that we did not want so I put ads in the Canberra Times freebies and offered these things and that was worse, people phoning and telling me they would be there at noon or whatever to pick stuff up and never turning up and one idiot (and that is being kind) turned up to buy a table that I'd advertised ($10) with a car full of stuff and wanted me to deliver it right across town (for free of course) because he could not carry it....

Some humans are just not fit to be called humans....

So you would like my letter box Granny, I'll post a pic of it.... It's one of only 2 remaining known ones in the world and certainly the only one in Australia still in use.  It's cast iron made around 1880 with the words NSW Railways & Tramways on the front and it was an "Official" Tramways mail box as opposed to a public tramways mail box - in Sydney, trams had mail boxes attached to them and the public could post letters in them (I have actually got a last tram mail cover), there was one at every Sydney Tram terminus where the crews could lodge their official mail and I came by this one by the simple act of removing it from Coogee Tram terminus just after the last Coogee tram in February 1962. Most of these Boxes were actually used for telephones but mine is the real mail box version.....

'Twas ever thus Basil.

No use getting upset about it though, is it.

Most of humanity is pretty ordinary - it's the exceptions that stand out; but they remain generally unrecognised, or get ostracised, by the mob at large.

Me, a cynic??

I know Rolly. I just wonder how these cretins survive life in general? I guess society is "geared" up to make the most of them... AND WOE BETIDE ANYONE WHO QUESTIONS THEIR RIGHT TO WELFARE FUNDED BY THE REST OF US!!!!

That's more than creative.  It's nostalgic and very historic.
A great collector's item.  Now you'll have someone wanting it and prepared to pay peanuts for it.
It seems to have historic value rather than monetary value.
Guard it with your life Basil.

well at least my "garage sale" will be aimed at the tradies more than the "great unwashed"

had another three couples go through our place today, one of them nicked my pantene hair shampoo, and it was half full, might put another one up there and piddle in it, see if they nick that

Dave, they did you a favour pinching your Pantene.
Get a decent, kinder-to-your-hair shampoo. Pantene products are full of silicone.
That's my beauty tip for today. Cheers Chris

oh okay, didnt know that, all I know is that it makes my hair all soft and cuggglllyyy!!

nah mum buys it and I use it, doesnt bother me what it is,

I put in a report of a couple of items that had been "inapropriately misplaced" to the real estate office, he has arranged a $1,000 auto payment to our bank account to cover "incidentals"

so the odd bottle of shampoo going "walkabouts" wont bother me quite so much, I will still leave the "loaded" bottle on the shelf though

i had a query from the estate agent if I could open "the workshop" for the potential purchasers to "evaluate" uhh!! "NO"

well my fervour for the human race, particularly the suburban sub species has had a severe knock to the realism plexus

I just didnt realise that people would stoop so low for such little reward, but rest assured they go nowhere near my workshop

If you just remember the disappearing toilet rolls and sink plugs in common user facilities, then you'll always have a reference point for judging the human race in general.

A cynic?

Who?

Me????
