Any comments re Jayco

Hi All

Haven't been "in touch" for a while but for those of you who remember we were asking about Prado v Pajero or Pathfinder.

Thanks for the very helpful comments for those who participated.  We settled for a 2007, diesel, auto, VRX Pajero with low km's and are very pleased with the purchase (so far).  We have fitted a bull bar, Tom Tom, two way radio, driving lights and thinking about putting in a diesel power chip.  We still have to add a cargo barrier and drawers in the back and then that will be the car just about done.

We have been looking at a 2008 Jayco Sterling 21ft van on the internet and wondered if anyone had any comments about the Jayco's.  Must admit have heard one or two grumblings about these vans so a bit apprehensive about moving forward with an offer and did notice that there seems to be a lot of Jayco's on the internet for sale.

Looking forward to your replies and thanks again for the help with the car.

You sure know how to bait the hook with a question about Jayco.
Welcome back Bradbury and wife.
Word of mouth is the best or worst sort of publicity. The word of mouth I have heard isn't good when it comes to Jayco anything, especially the more recent models.
Leaking is the big one, espcially if it has a windout section. Dust and water find the gaps everywhere. My park neighbours have had to do some serious modifications on their 1 year old Jayco with wind out.
If it's a used van you're looking at, check around the windows, doors, roof line and joins for water marks. Then check the roof for extra weight added by silicone sealer.
At least with a used van the teething problems will have been found and hopefully, resolved so you get the better van.
All the best with your decision, and your travels. Cheers Chris

Hi Bradbury,

On previous posts I have made quite a few comments as have others about Jayco products.

Not to be a smart arse here, but if you go to the top of this page where it says SEARCH and click on it and then enter JAYCO, it will bring up all the Nice and Not so Nice things that members have said about Jayco.

Hope this helps out.  BTW I now own a 2009 Jayco 20ft Van and would recommend the product to anyone, but have had some poor dealings with other Jayco Vans.

Have to disagree with Chris on this one.

Have a great one

I've been around the block a few times, talked to a hell of a lot of owners, the main reason for jaycos failing is simply the number of them on the road, there is thousands of them they are probabley the most predominant van out there, they would have a failure rate of no more than ten percent and then the problems are only minor

now having said that if in a van park there is 30 jaycos and you hear of one complaint then thats about the norm, they are a damn good van for the price and I would have no hesitation about recommending them to anyone

keep up the regular maintenece and leakage is not a problem, dust is, as in all vans, bulldust gets into Kimberley Kampers, nothing keeps it out

put in a bid and if it has been looked after you will have a smile a mile wide

Hi, we have a 21ft Jayco Sterling purchased in May 08 ; we travelled from SA to Perth for 6 months, back home for Christmas. Departed for Qld in March, stopping at Mudgee, Tamworth and Pt MacQuarrie before arriving here on Sunshine Coast. We did have water leak into the wardrobes during very heavy rain in Perth which was fixed on first service at dealer in Perth. Yes dust got in around wheel rims after driving from Wave Rock to Norseman on red dust road (our choice).
So to cap it off, we got what we paid for, the van has been, and will be our home for a while longer yet (we are going home for Christmas again then off to WA again). We have got sun shades attached to awning, but we are aiming for a full annexe to give us an extra room.
Good luck with your choice, but we are more than happy with ours. As others have stated, with the thousands of Jaycos on the road they must have something going for them, price and weight did it for us.
cheers,
Colleen

My comment is more about the Pajero than the Jayco. I have a 2003 Pajero (diesel manual) that I purchased new and I'm more than happy with it after six years. Regarding the drawers you propose, I opted for a shelf rather than a set of drawers (which I made myself) in order to have convenient access to the well where the "dickie" seats are normally stowed (seats removed). I have a "Bushman" fridge mounted on a slide on the shelf. I find this arrangement  very useful not only for travelling but also for around town when the vehicle is in "shopping trolley" mode. I also have a "Long Ranger" auxiliary fuel tank fitted.

Re the chip, I have a friend who is a co-proprietor of Dieselcare http://www.dieselcare.com.au/ who may be worth a contact for info on the chip. PM me if you would like more info.

best wishes, Jim

Bradbury,

I only have a small Jayco (see avatar) but very happy with it. Jayco have over 50% of the market so there will be more on the road and advertised 2nd hand, also for those that are reported faulty may seem more because of the numbers out there.

You could also pose your question on the Jayco forum to other Jayco owners, go to;

www.jayco.com.au

Put pointer on "owners info" on main page, then click on "travel diary".

You could also look at this link;

http://www.caravanersforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2163&hilit=Jayco+Owners

Good luck with your choice whatever it may be,

Vic
