'newbies" need help

Hi! I'm not sure whether or not to classify us as newbies because we've been travelling and following the website for a couple of years. We are a couple in our 50s who worked in teaching and building, and raised 6 kids who are all off on their own now.

In December we sold up and moved into our brand new Longreach to do the big trip around Australia. We made it as far as Adelaide, and found out that we had to return to Sydney for treatment as Helen's breast cancer was spreading. So we came back to Sydney to have radiation and chemotherapy - the battle goes on. But we are not ready to give up yet.

What we need is just a nice place to park our Longreach, out of the city but close enough to attend medical visits. None of our friends or family have been able to come up with a suitable place. We are practical people, typical grey nomads I think. We thought that perhaps someone might be able to use a caretaker or just someone to keep an eye on their place. I don't want to be negative but people in Sydney don't seem to understand how we are thinking, they just tell us to book into a caravan park not thinking about our reasons for investing in a self-contained motor home.

So I am asking you resourceful people out there for some ideas. I just know that you can put your heads together and come up with something.

Heaps of thanks.

Welcome to the Forum Helen and Andrew.  You will certainly get the right advice here and lots of it.

Sorry to hear about Helen's cancer but with your attitude I am sure you will both overcome any difficulties.

Do you have any particular area in mind.  I would think not too far from where Helen has her treatment perhaps.

Define it a little more and we will see what we can come up with.

Best wishes

Ma

Thank you for responding so quickly! The treatment is being done at Westmead, near Parramatta. So about an hour from Parramatta would be good. We'd love to get away from the city buildings and traffic. Just now we're in a holiday house at Avoca on the central coast and that is a good distance.

Hi Helen and Andrew,
Hope someone can help you. If we were near Paramatta we would gladly try and help you out. Good luck with the treatment and hope all goes well. Yes cities are not much fun very impersonal at times and some city people are just too busy to care.

If you can leave it with me for a day or two, I might just have the spot for you.

Any objections to the Richmond/Kurrajong/Grose Vale area.

about a 15 minute drive to the train station at Richmond and the train stops at Westmead which is then just a couple of minutes walk to where you need to go.

Been there done that.  Not me, my late husband.

All the best to both of you in your fight.
Welcome to Nomads Helen and Andrew.
No matter where you are, someone somewhere here will help if they can.
A couple I "met" here on nomads helped me out when I had to go to Brissy for medical stuff a few weeks ago. They welcomed me, an absolute total stranger like a long lost relly.
I'm hoping to catch up with them, and another couple when I have to go back for more stuff. You're among "friends", who all have travel in common. Either the dream or the reality, it's all about travel. I hope you win the fight. Cheers Chris

Good Onya Ma!!

Bad enough having the illness let alone having to then worry where to park.

All the best Helen and Andrew. Keep your spirits up!!

Welcome to the forum Helen and Andrew I have sent my feelers out with my surbuban relis in Sydney if they hear of anything that would suit you to let me know. It is a shame they live in a tightly packed suburban environment but they do know people on farms to the south of Sydney and will spread the word down there. I wish you luck Helen in your latest battle I have been down that breast cancer road 2006 was the year i refer to as my year from hell but I amazed myself with the tough cookie i had to become as i prepared for battle. I yelled at myself in the mirror alot or actually I think I was yelling at the cancer. We are lucky in a way down here in southern NSW we have chemo and radiation facilities in Albury and Wodonga and did not have to travel far. I read this on a bumper sticker a few years ago and quoted it to myself a lot in 2006 'DREAM BELIEVE STRIVE AND SUCEED' i still do when my markers get the urge to go up and down. so best wishes and battle hard and I will be in touch via the forum if I find anything out. Cheryl
