Anyone know what the road is like from Winton to Richmond  so I can connect to the Flinders Hwy to go onto Townsville   On the maps it shows as a development road  so just how developed is it .  Is there an alternative route that anyone would recommended towing a standard sealed road van

It was fine a couple of months ago, narrow in places but nowhere as bad as I was led to believe.

We drove Winton to Hughenden on the Kennedy Development Rd, and then to Charters Towers and Townsville on the Flinders Highway in September 2008.  Our vehicle is a Holden Commodore, towing an 18ft full van.

We left Winton about 7.00am and arrived in Hughenden by about 10.00am.  The road is long, straight, narrow in parts, but good bitumen surface and has very good long distance vision.  We passed only 3 cars in the first two hours, then about 10 more in the last hour. We enjoyed the drive, but had no wet weather to contend with, and wouldn't hesitate to drive it again.  Very easy to imagine dinosaurs roaming those parts.

If you then want to go to Richmond you will need to backtrack 112 ks along the Flinders Highway towards Mt Isa from Hughenden.

Thanks for all the good info much appreciated , wasn't sure if it was dirt or tar now I know In a former life I flew over the area on a regular basis but never bothered to take note on what was on the ground from 30000 feet, never pictured myself driving it for fun

G'Day All,

Did the Winton / Hughenden / Richmond / Mt Isa run 2 months ago.

Good road all the way. As some have said the Winton / Hughenden run (Kennedy Dev Road) is narrow in some parts but is generally a good sealed surface.

Cheers

If your staying at Richmond overnight Wombat, they have a nice caravan park there with good clean ablutions and drive through sites. Also their museum is worth visiting.
