Unauthorised Use Of Our Email Addresses (Correction - False Alarm)

I received this email today from a Samuel Lees, Samuel.Lees@student.uts.edu.au I noticed a few of our members email addresses on on the email addresses including Cruising Granny and Ibbo etc, to the best of my knowledge mine is not shown on my profile.  Does anyone know how they got our email addresses, I have not authorised anyone to use mine, nor have I supplied anyone elses, see the email contents below, I will be sending this to the Webmaster also;

Dear Outback NSW Traveller

My name is Samuel Lees and I am doing a Bachelor of Management in Tourism degree at the University Of Technology Sydney (UTS) and am working with Outback NSW Tourism to identify the most influential information sources used by visitors to Outback NSW.

Since you have travelled to (or are currently touring) Outback NSW, your feedback would be most appreciated.

If you would like to participate in the 5 minute survey, could you please CLICK HERE where you will be directed to the survey. You will remain anonymous. Any information you provide is confidential and will only be seen by the executive manager of ORTO, Lori Modde, my university supervisor, Dr. Jennie Small and myself.

Your participation will assist Outback NSW to provide a better service for travel to the region. If you have any questions regarding the research, these can be directed to my supervisor:

Dr. Jennie Small, School of Leisure, Sport and Tourism
University Of Technology Sydney (UTS)
PO Box 222, Lindfield, NSW 2070
Email: Jennie.Small@uts.edu.au
Tel: (02) 9514-5109

Or alternatively to the client:

Lori Modde, Executive Manager of Outback NSW Tourism
PO BOX 222, Galston NSW 2159
Email: lori@lorickmanagement.com.au
Tel: (02) 8208-6122

Thank you for your time and happy travelling!

Kind Regards

Samuel Lees

Is this the same Samuel Lees that was on the forum a while back?  Must check the Users List.

Good spot Guru and Ma,

Come to think of it I remember it now, and yes some us responded to help this young man out, including me, says I with egg on face, so that is how he had our email addresses (or those that responded to him).

Sorry about that, however he should have used a hidden email address (Bcc) for everyone as I am sure many like me would not like their email addresses shown to all and sundry.

Thanks for that Guru and Ma, it is a relief to know who he is, if I remember correctly he was going to do a research RV trip himself with a friend.

Same here Ibbo, my only concern is the latest group email to us all showed all our email addresses (those who responded to his request) he should have made these Bcc instead of public on the group email. Not only is this how hackers/spammers pick up email addresses but also those on the group email list may not want their email addresses know to others on the list.  I have sent an email reply to Sam asking if he could send any further group emails as Bcc so they are not visible to others.

I had completely forgotten about his original contact on this forum, hence my post, I freaked out when I saw it, I am giving myself a new nickname; "Vic with Egg on Face".
My apologies to everyone.

hi vic.           it makes you wonder about people???   this bloke asks for help, and then he is to naive,or dumb,or doesn't care, to PROTECT your details.     thank god for gmail and hotmail.         vic, the police here in queensland call this identity theft.        mate one of my daughters has had her identity stolen, and its just a nightmare trying to fix it.       your a good person for trying to help him with his studies, but i dont think very much of him

To make it worse Ken & Marg, I had supplied my original email address to him instead of my hotmail address, this is what I couldn't figure out as I had joined the forum with my hotmail address, but now understand how he came to have it.

He is only a young bloke so I suppose he just didn't think.  I wish he had followed up with an email on the site here to his original one, but he might have been scared off with some of the responses he got on his original thread.

Anyway, I hope he has the message now, I will still help him, so will go and have my medication now and a lay down, cry

RE: Unauthorised Use Of Our Email Addresses (Correction - False Alarm)

I personally had agreed to participate in the survey.
What I think Sammy did was put the address in the CC section of the email address rather than the BCC address.
I can be messy to have email addresses flaunted around without our approval, but I hope in this instance it won't have any adverse effects in the long term.
Maybe if we all reply and recommend he uses the alternate address option all will be ok.
Good luck with that. Cheers Chris

Yes Granny, I sent him an email suggesting he do that in future, but he hasn't responded yet.

Basil,

Here is the survey link if you want to see it, I haven't done it yet, the link name is another reason I was wary before Guru and Ma put me wise to who it was, see;

(See the symbol for threepence in the old money on the end, or a "tray" as we used to call it in LSD currency) biggrin

I keep telling you mob, throw your personal stuff around and eventually it will come back and bight you on the freckle, so far you have all got off lightly,

you'd be surprised how much can be gleaned from a date of birth and a phone number, watch your backsides or pay the price

Never ever earned enough of it in those days to be able to afford any......cheap plonk was about the only illegal drug then if you were under 21 !biggrin

Yep Dave, it is a risk you either take or don't, normally I am very cautious with my email addy.   Got an apology from young Samuel for showing the addresses, he did say the email was sent from a secure site, however the exposure of the email addresses was a bit of a worry.  If every I forward an email sent to me by someone else, the first thing I do is delete the others persons email address including any work info etc at the bottom before sending it on to someone.hmm

As one who enjoys swapping a joke or two via email I try to insist that fellow "jokesters" edit the email to remove all previous senders and recipients and other identifying material before forwarding them on. I also try to insist that the addresses of multiple recipients not be visible to others by using the BCC (blind carbon copy) address line (as mentioned above by Cruising Granny) and not the TO or CC address lines. Some email programs do not show the BCC address line as a default option. This can be changed by going to the options dialog box.

I recently received an email containg a joke that was very politically incorrect (and therefore very funny!) that contained a footnote that clearly indentified one of the senders up the chain as being employed by an exclusive private school. This is just the sort of stuff that some bottom feeding type journo could get onto and beat into a major story. (I'm not suggesting that all journos are bottom feeders but some are)

Only the journos who don't know how to identify news or where to find it.
I don't know what they teach them in "journalism school" but it doesn't seem to be any of the above. Maybe they teach them how to rake up the muck.
Others don't seem to care about the impact on people's lives - the topic of the story or the readers.
Unfortunately in this day of technology, everyone could be a target. Phone cameras seem to be a great tool, or weapon. We just have to look after ourselves and those around us.
Cheers Chris

I looked at the survey... pesonally it is in my opinion skewed towards finding the best way of advertising "outback NSW". Absolutley no relevance to Grey Nomads what so ever.....
My opinion only, not necessarily those of the sponsor....

yep all the questions are relevent only to "outback N.S.W." didnt bother filling it in, I pass through "outback N.S.W." on the way to decent places but thats all, nothing to do with grey nomads or their travel plans
