We have just watched the 'Four Corners' show on the TV, and it's truly amazing/frightening what these up to date 'Hackers' and 'Identity' thieves get up to. Fortunately, most of us GN's know how to protect our computers from that kind of misfortune, but sadly, there seems to be an astonishing number of folk in Oz that are totally unaware of how vulnerable they are to these miscreants, especially when using 'Wireless Networks' in or around the big cities. I spoke to a couple, who I saw using a laptop at the last rest spot we were at, and they didn't even have an 'Anti-Virus' program on their machine, and they still do their On-line banking and CC purchases on it!! Needless to say, I left them with the details of two of the best free AV's available on the Internet. Hopefully they will install one of them ASAP.

This is a new antivirus not readily known in Oz yet. I obtained it from the overseas forum I use. Its brilliant and worth a look for sure.

I bought a new laptop a month ago and they offered an AV for free. I told them I use Panda and he wanted to know how I got my hands on it as it was not available here. I asked if it was any good and he sung its praises.

I also watched the four corners program (one of my rare times when I was able to stay awake) it frightened the hell out of me. all my anti virus stuff is top notch and up to date but apparently we are still vulnerable to a determined hacker
Just to show you how sleazy these people are I logged into the ME bank but not via my link but by a link I googled as I had momentrily forgotten the link. I tried to log on a few times and was rejected but got a message to phone on a number to have my account unlocked so I did and I was asked all the questions and then asked my password and fortunatley in that split instant I realised that they would not ask for that and when I questioned the operator ( I should have known it was fake as I got a human straight away) they said it was for security..... I hung up and checked up and sure enough there are 2 websites...... I got an interesting response from the bank when I told them.

Gee that was a close call mate, a lot of people out there would have given them that password unfortunately.
yes they would.... Was listening to the wireless and heard about a couple at the football who had their care broken into and the only things taken were the GPS and remote for the garage door. They arrived home after the game to discover their house ransacked, the lowlifes use the "take me home" function on the GPS and the remote to get in..... Urban myth? maybe - but plausible

Mike and Judy, good spot, yes I did use that one before my current one, I was the "Pop" of the one Jon was using........so now Dave (Paleface) gets the child maintenance bill instead I did pm Dave and told him about it, and said I won't be using it anymore so he's welcome to it. Hmmm.......not quite the same as the real Dave, but then he might be looking ahead

Thanks for the info. I have had a bug in my computer for about a week and my antivirus has not been able to detect it.New tabs keep appearing in IE or Firefox, usually to sites i would not visit. Downloaded Panda and it found it first scan. have emailed tech department of my antivirus asking them to explain why their product which I paid top dollar for didn't find the trojan.
Thats great to here mate, its been highly praised in the US and UK. I will pass this on to the forum I frequent, one of the CEO's of Panda is a member, he will be stoked.

I posted this same thing a while back Basil. A policeman friend of mine told me NOT to put in our home addy. He had dealt with quite a few GPS thefts which invariably led to home theft.

Hi guys, let them know on the other forum you success with Panda and one of the Panda guys wrote back with the following:
I'm glad to hear that our free solution is out there helping people when their paid solutions fail. This is exactly the change we hoped to drive at Panda. Not only do we put our blood, sweat, & tears into the technology, but we also invest a big chunk of our profits to R&D, which is what makes Collective Intelligence and Cloud AV possible. In regard to Cloud AV, we made the interface as simple as possible, but the reality is that the magic is behind the scenes in our research lab. All of the malicious samples are processed, analyzed, compared against 20 years of Malware research data, and delivered to client in real time... and to think, this is only the beginning
In reference to the question, the short answer is that traditional AV software cannot keep up with the number of threats. PandaLabs receives over 50,000 samples a day and in a traditional lab environment you would need a huge army of highly skilled malware researchers to protect the customer in a 24-72 hour timeframe. The problem is further amplified by the fact that 52% of malware is only active for 24 hours before it changes (http://www.technologyreview.com/blog/unsafebits/23987/).
Hope that helps!
Sean-Paul
They really don't mind interacting with their customers thats for sure.
