First post an introduction

Hi
I thought I would introduce myself. afler all I have been reading your posts, and chit chat for a little while now. I'm John or Johno 58 years young from Perth WA. A short time ago I was made redundant through a factory closure after 25 years. I have been contemplating the possibility of traveling and working my way around Australia, ever since I came to these beautiful shores. But having been a desk jocky for the last 20 years, I'm not sure if it's possible at this stage. The idea of shutting up the house and heading off is a major life change. And I do not think my present skill set will travel too well. The idea of learning new skills does not phase me (getting that oppertunity does). Traversing this beautiful and sometimes harsh country is something I have always craved to do. Your forums are very active and friendly and very informative. And I will be asking the odd daft question or 6. And may be even answer some. The rig I have at the moment is an on road camper trailer, (I bought when I had a commodore) and a Nissan Navara 2000 3.5 deisel non turbo. With a standard tank. I look forward to reading the forum and joining in the chat.

Hey John, welcome to the forum (I'm the one they all warn you about LOL!!)

I too am a desk jockey, have been off and on now for about 20 years with 3 months off every year for good behavior (well reaping anyway) just because that is or was your lifestyle before doesn't mean you must continue with it,

I will give you a tip that most people NEVER learn during a lifetime of living, life is a malleable thing you can shape it to suit yourself there is nothing set in stone, what you do today does not have to be repeated tomorrow, many paths to trek, choose the one that suits you

you have a very capable vehicle and a reasonable camper trailer, if you have any inkling at all to travel then go to it, don't think about it just go, if you like it then continue, if you don't like it then continue until you bloody well do LOL!

no in all honesty just go, meet some folks and all will be great, if not well at least you had a go at it

Hi all or should I say g'day all. AS this pom is going to get his citizenship soon. Better late than never. Well if I'm a spring chicken or an old dog, thanks for all the replies. And the positive boot in the proverbial ass from you all to get going and see what's out there.
When I come back from the uk. I will have no real obstructions to stop me. And thanks Vic for the invite to the UWE even though I do not have an RV. It will be good to meet like minded people for a chat.

Dave
Yep was a real head scratcher confuse. Got 45 min's to finish it did it in under 10. Found it a bit insulting. But having been only in the country 28 years, I'm classed as a Newbie.

G.day John,
As has been said ,lock your front door and head out of your surburb, dont matter which way, just do it,
And as one unregistered pommie to another we are all aussies under the belt
My advise , we are in for a stinker this summer in central Qld, unless you like 45 degree heat stay away

Allow me to welcome you to the country - it's never too late, and to the Nomads.
Congratulations on your pending citenzenship. I'd love to see the questionaire.
It sounds as though your next hardest decision is, "will I, or won't I"?
I reckon you should. What's stopping you? In all those working years you would have picked up more experience and skills than just riding the desk.
If you can speak up for yourself, cook, mow a lawn and trim a tree, pick fruit, drive a truck your options are almost limitless. You may be your own personal handicap to success if you don't explore your options.
It's a big wide world out here and as they say, it's your very own personal oyster. The further you go and the more people you meet, the better your choices will be.
All the best to you, and safe and happy travels. As someone once said, "Just do it!" Cheers Chris

I don't usually post welcomes; I'm a lazy sod and the rest of the mob on the site do a damned good job of it anyway.   wink

But, welcome from me too.

The answer is to get outfitted with the absolute minimum that you think that you can get away with and get out of the urban environment so that you can do some clear thinking.

Don't forget to respond positively to your gut reactions; there' a fair chance that they will fail you less frequently than reasoned thought.

Note those things that bring you joy; that stir your soul a little; and follow those feelings rather than the things that you know that you "ought" to be doing.

Almost all of us have skills and talents that we undervalue.  After all, if it comes easy to us, then surely anyone can do it.

Maybe, but most likely not.

There are stacks of people who cannot/will not/ or even simply haven't the time and patience to do the things that we do with relative ease and, what's really important, really enjoy doing.

If we have the ability to enjoy learning new skills that others have no interest in, there will most usually be someone to utilise this new found ability.

Training and experience have their place in the scheme of things, but right mindedness and good attitude are the things that really get things done well.
What you don't know you can soon learn, and a willingness to listen to and apply the knowledge and experiences of others, as well as your own, will invariably serve you better than a string of letters after your name.

Go for it.

You have little to fear except fear itself.

No after my trip to the uk. And I'm brave enough for the hard road. Recon I'll stay out of Queensland. Don't mind cooking but do not want to be cooked. Especialy in a trailer and no aircon. When I was a young pup I left a steady job where I served my apprenticeship, and left for Jersey (channel islands) to pick spuds. Parents thought I was mad. so did my mates. I ended up a foreman on a wase plant working 10hrs a day making more money than I ever had. And it was only the itch to get out of town that tore me away from me soft bed.

So as the saying goes if you have done it once.........................................
