“Are grey nomads the litter busters?”

We have just read the article on our Grey Nomads homepage about 'Are grey nomads the litter busters?'
And we would like to mention our support to that program during our travels too.
Most of the places we have covered since leaving Sapphire, Cairns, Townsville, Darwin, Wyndham and down to here at Geraldton, have been reasonably good, but my Queen still insists on going around with her tongs, and bags up the non bio-degradable and wildlife threatening stuff and manages to squeeze it into the bins provided, before we depart from a site. There have been many stops though, where we have encountered disgusting deposits left by truly inconsiderate, thoughtless plebs, and I simply will not let my good lady go anywhere near that. So out comes my trusted fold-up shovel and if I can't bury it (because the soil is too hard) then I simply cover it so that no one has the misfortune of treading into it during the night.
Most of the culprits of this 'Careless' type of activity, that we have seen so far, come from those foreigners that hire/rent their graffiti'd 'Whizz-Bang' vehicles. So from here on, we have decided to make a note of the vehicle rego's and pass these onto to the relevant company for their perusal. Who knows, the company might even fit a shovel and/or folding frame and bag to the vehicles.

we used too but no more will we pick up others waste, it just seems to grow in stature, we will pick up around our imediate camp and keep that tidy but as for the rest, forget it, I'm not touching other peoples foul leftovers so as to keep it clean for when they return

if the place is too foul we simply dont stay there, city folk are the worst offenders especially after a long weekend, we try not to travel then, the filthy mongrels just leave crap everywhere

The most disgusting place we found was The Boab in WA. It is not hard to dig a hole at all and if the ground is so hard, cover with a rock or what ever you find.

Some people have no consideration for their own health and well being so won't worry about strangers who come along after them.

We always keep our own area clean and find most people who are near us do the same. Its a shame there are so many who don't though.

When I use to visit my father every other week before he died, I use to stay at Mt Panorama.  I always camped at the same spot, where there was a BBQ and covered Picnic tables.  The first time I camped there I got to with my broom and swept the cement under and around the picnic table , took forever as I doubt if it had ever been swept and this was after the October races so it was particularly dirty.  I also had to scrub the cement picnic table and seats and also the BBQ.  It was filthy with old grease and God only know what else.  Well next day, I went to visit my father, spent the day with him, came back and some lousy bugger had used the area for a BBQ lunch.  Left the BBQ  all greasy and unwashed, split beer all over the picnic table, left the beer cans on the table, left scraps of food around the table and on the ground.  Total pigs.  I cleaned it up again.  The next fortnight I was back, same thing, rubbish everywhere, but to top that off, some lousy bugger had glued up the BBQ with silicone.  Nice !!  I take it, that was the local louts, having "fun".

The worst place we've come across is the Qld-WA borderon the TanimiDesert road. We decided not to have smoko there, kept travelling till we found a suitable spot. Sadly, that took quite a while. I don't think it is the GN's. I believe we {GN's} leave our overnight stops cleaner than when we arrive. I know, as a kid, I would get a wopping if I didn't clean up after myself. cheers

If you're in the vicinity of a community, I think you'll find the cans, boxes, nappies, food wrappers and soft drink bottles come from the "locals". Many of these communities are "dry", so they do all their drinking before heading home. I've been to the Boab Tree and that's what I saw. They pick their favourite "site" and set up camp until the grog and food is gone.
The turn off to Bidyadanga Community south of Broome is an absolute disgrace. The don't clean up because "it's white man's rubbish".
The park at the entrance to Broome is a perfect example, albeit a disgrace which refects on Broome. There's a park on the approach to Derby which looks the same.
It's not always the b/packers in those Wicked Vans either. Some of them are extremely environmentally aware and respect where they are.
The other culprits are the city weekenders. The kids are let loose so they don't annoy the adults on their weekend or time away from the confines of the burbs. Their rubbish is also let loose. They don't realise the rubbish truck doesn't pass that way on Friday morning.
The shires in those more remote areas do their best to keep up with the roadside bins, but it's a big job.
As for those who do not bury what they do, disgusting pigs! Cheers Chris
