Strezleci Track

Never done this before and a mate has asked if I'd travel with them in the October school hols....
It's suggested that it can be done with a conventional vehicle and van. Comments please....
Is this a bit like the Chambers Pillar road where you just follow the crowd?

It shouldn't be too busy up that way by then. The Innamincka and Birdsville Races would have been and gone. These events bring the heaviest traffic to this region from all directions.
The road should be ok for a solid, open surface road.
My friends at Inna reckon it's ok. I was considering tugging the van out there from Leigh Creek, but I'll keep that plan on my back burner.
Do as much homework as you can to research the road conditions up to the time you take off. The homestay, pub or shop should be able to give you the latest road report from the truck which travels out there with weekly stores. The mail flies out on Saturday, but that's another trip our of Pt. Augusta. Another great experience.
When you get to Inna you can park up at the Cooper Creek Homestay and plug into power part of the time. They have hot and cold showers with great pressure, and you can either use the camp kitchen and fire pit, or you can eat in the house, or cook your own and eat over in the "pit kitchen".
It's a beautiful, unexpected oasis in this very remote and desolate part of the country. You can even catch a fish in the Creek.
Go for it Basil if the circumstances are suitable. Cheers Chsir

Basil, in our experience, the Strzelecki is usually in better condition than the Old South Road, or the road to out to Chambers Pillar.
The Strzelecki is clay capped and maintained for the Moomba operation.
That said, it had a few broken surface sections that required caution when we last drove it in April '09, bt nothing that can't be negotiated with care by conventional vehicles.
Reduce your tyre pressures and reduce your speed (don't be lulled into a sense of security by the best sections) and have an extra spare.
If it gets wet, nothing moves until it drys out.

Cheers,
Peter

G'Day All,

We did the Broken Hill / Tibooburra / Cameron Corner / Innamincka / Strez Track (South) about 18 months ago in our AWD Territory pulling our 20' Concept van.

No big problems, the track is generally well maintained and providing you drive to the conditions and do a bit of prevention work re dust entry, and stone damage I think this iconic trip can be done by virtually any reasonable rig.

Plenty of good camps along the Cooper - we used the town common at Innamincka - be sure to take plenty of potable water - the town supply is pumped from the Cooper and could upset sensitive tummies!

The drive out to the Dig Tree, from Innamincka, is also worthwhile.

We loved that trip and would not hesitate to do it again.

Cheers
Lazo

Just make sure you have a reasonable ground clearance. Other than that Peter and Margaret summed it up just right.

You'll get a lot of road trains on the track heading to Moomba but they don't rush along that road and the only other time you may get a bit of a problem is if it rains some of the ruts can get quite deep.

It is a really nice trip and I would recommend it.
