My son (who I'm currently staying with) will be getting married in Palm Cove Qld about August of next year .. My intention is to arrange my 'schedule' to be up in that area well before the due date and I'm looking into using the Palm Cove Camping Ground as a point of stay .. No doubt many of you good people have probably visited this spot .. I've not been able to find any good detail on the 'net' .. other than that a few years ago that it was due for some kind of facelift !
.. (Granny) .. Chris, I understand you may have a fairly good knowlege of this area .. Do you or anyone else have any 'recent' information about this site and what your opinions of it might be as a place to stay at for a week or two ..
I had already viewed badgers site which led me to contacting Cairns regional Council. Unfortunately, it seems that they must be enjoying their 2009 Festival at the moment as Im still waiting to hear from them .
No hurry here whatsoever .. as I wll be heading up that way anyway next year, and I'll see for myself ..

Yes Terry .. I was speaking with another yeterday that said the same .. so will definitely do a recce there and most likely a close look at what else is in the locality .. I will have the time .. The main purpose of looking at the Palm Cove site was because its walking distance from the wedding 'grounds' .. I wouldn't have to waddle far to get to bed !! ..
Well John, I haven't personally been to the park, nor have I heard any comments about it, but I have a sneaking suspicion development has taken over what was the caravan park out there. Maybe that's why you can't find any info. The Cairns Holiday Park is on the southern entrance to town. Lots of bells and whistles for kids, so if you're coming up during school holidays that's probably a good spot to avoid, unless you really enjoy the laughter of happy kids all the time. I'm staying at the First City Caravilla Van Park, a little closer to town on the southern approach. The park is quiet and a street back from the main highway, but the locals can be noisy as they walk alongside the park on the way home from the Balaclave pub. White Rock also has a park on the souther side of town. It's been upgraded recently, but I'm not sure about it. On the northern side there is the Crystal Cascades and Lake Placid van parks, a little out of the way but very popular. The other park is Sun City, just off the Capt Cook Highway on the northern side of the CBD of Cairns, a little closer to the Airport. August is part of the busy season, so it may pay to do a bit of planning and phone ahead a day or two before you arrive. Good luck. Cheers Chris

I've tried the suggested phone number but just receiving an engaged signal .. I'll persevere .. you never know, business might be so good they only take bookings on weekdays ! .. hehe I shouldn't be so flippant .. lotsa time to find out .. ta !
Hi Chris the cairns holiday park is in Little st. off James st 3.5 klms from the city must have it confused with another park, it has been redeveloped and has new facilities and is in good location if you want to walk to city . The palm cove caravan is run by cairns city council and is having an up grade and is in a top location it is across the road from the fishing jetty . Terry
Hi Jon, I don't know how good this will be, but I found an address and phone no. Palm Cove Caravan Park, 23 Veivers Rd., Palm Cove , Cairns. Ph. 0740-553-564. [Slightly different to the other no.]
Was up that way last year, Palm Cove Caravan Park is at the northern end of esplanade, very basic but great location. Friends were staying there, they thought park was going to be upgraded this year, not sure if this has happened or not.
We stayed a few km further north at Ellis Beach, another great spot right on the water. Both parks are quite small and very busy at peak times.
Hope this helps
Rod

If it is being upgraded, it could be the reason that I'm not getting any contact via landline .. Thanks mate .. upgrades mean higher costs too .. well, we shall see ..
Just food for thought here .. but the Caravan Park I'm thinking of can actually be seen if you have google-earth on your system .. old pictures though !
open GE .. type in Palm Cove Qld .. hit the return key .. when the screen opens up on Palm Cove, move up the screen to where you see the jetties .. Just across to the left and down little from the Esplanade you should see a scattering of campsites ..
Pity we couldn't get a closer view .. but then .. ones privacy is pretty important too ..
I don't know it, could it have been the one I stayed in which is on the left of the main road as you drive in to PC? Pretty basic and I thought expensive from memory. Palm Cove did not do a lot for me....

We live at Trinity Park which is about ten minutes drive (or three beaches South) from Palm Cove. We heard that the caravan park was given to the council by a chap who owned it and wanted it to be a van park for all time.
Not too sure of the status at present. I will take a drive up there tomorrow and make some inquiries and if it is still a goer I will take a few happy snaps that my husband can email to you and provide any other details.
Great stuff Pauline this what i like to see somebody on the spot helping out , with member all over this large land we should be able to get the right info for each other great work Terry
thanks for doing that Pauline. To have ones own on-the-spot reporter takes some beating ! .. I have never been up there .. only as far as the Lake Placid Caravan Park some years ago .. but quite keen to see the area .. There's a strong possiblity that I may make a trip there earlier than intended .. I'm now quite curious to see it .. Regardless .. I will still attend my sons wedding there next August ..
There is a campground at Ellis Beach just north of Palm Cove. Don't know anything about it other than having driven past it a few times on the way to Port Douglas etc. I suspect it may be a council run affair. I think Lake Placid would be the closest Caravan Park "per se" to Palm Cove. Cool Waters is right beside a main road so I suspect it could be a bit noisy.
Addendum...
I see Caravan Parks Aust Wide list a c. p. at Clifton Beach which is on the north side of Cairns.

.. as of a few moments ago, I was in touch with the caretakers of the Park. The current lease expires at the end of this month and the talk is about a fairly comprehensive upgrade .. and it sounds like new lease-holders too !!
At this point in time, neither the caretakers or the regional council can provide any further data as I understand that 'tenders' for the project are yet to be sought .. so thats as it stands at the moment .. Currently the Park is 'flat out' and packed .. so business is obviously good .. and from the sounds of it, there seems to be an effort to keep at least part of the Park still operational during any proposed upgrade ..
I'll investigate progress further down the line ..
Went for a look today. Park is very run down with the office looking like it has been half demolished already. The toilets are run down but quite clean. The rather grumpy lady in the office said that she believes the place is to be upgraded in about a month. Some talk of a Big4 but that would mean the council would have to sell or possibly lease the park. Spoke to a lady who had the last spot closest to the beach and she said it was quiet enough. They are paying $17 a night for powered site for a Britz van and two tents. Two adults and two teenage girls in the group. If it is still there in August next year it would likely do for the short time you need.
The full address of the park is: PALM COVE CAIRNS CITY COUNCIL CAMPING GROUNDS, 149 Williams Esplanade, Qld 4879. Ph 07 40553824
I have attempted to attach four photos. Hope they come out. As you will see it is very dry up this way. We didn't have our usual ten feet of rain over winter.
you went to a lot of trouble and I thank you for that .. A little difficult to predict what will happen over the next 10-12 months .. but I will keep an eye on it .
Regards to Ian as well .. My youngest lad has chosen the same career and quite enjoying the challenges ..
