back from streaky bay

Much to my regret i had to come home from South Australia. Neil and Lynne went to Becks either last tues or Wed and jenny was not there. Had planned to go back again but the weather was so perfect we went fishing a lot and got our bag limit of king george whiting everyday which was great. Not long now until you go over there. Had a couple of beautiful meals at Mocean Rest. And the town is a buzz with news of a new eco resort out at Cape Bauer which everyone is happy about to boost the economy of the town. Visited my house briefly for a quick inspection the young guy in it is looking after it well. Also had a great time visiting my stepson and family in the barossa but did indulge in a little too much red wine. And Dave didnt get lost once on taking the alternative route I was shocked going along the river to Swan hill we usually go Deni and Balranald I didnt know that Lake Boga had totally evaporated it looked like a ghost town. And also coming back Lake Benanee near Robinvale where a lot of people camp also dry. Very jealous Dave you are on your way up the centre hope you are having a great trip. cheryl

Hi Guys, I'm glad you had a good time, a shame Jenny wasn't there but not to worry, we will say 'hi' to her in a couple weeks for you, lol.
Were you fishing from a boat in SB?  If not, where were you fishing?  I will have my rod with me.  I don't know anyone there now with a boat.
Were the oysters up to par?  I'm so looking forward to many feeds of them.  Have you tried them in batter?  Yummy.
There is no such thing as "too much red wine" there is only not enough days to spread it over, lol.
I am not looking forward to seeing the "dry' over there, we are so spoilt now as it is very green everywhere in the southwest of WA.

Cheers

Neil and Lynne the oysters were exceptional big and juicy and yes totally addicted to battered oysters had them at the pub and the caravan park kiosk. then aslo bought home 25 doz so cooked a couple of doz battered oysters on arrival home also like them with mayo wasabi and lemon juice when they are fresh so have had 3-4 doz that way as well. We didnt have a boat but our letting agent did and he took us fishing at haslam and the fish just jump on your hook very impressive he does a lot of fishing and knew all the hot spots. Rob is now extra keen to get his new boat and get back over there at end of feb we arranged with our tennant to leave the boat at the house so I can see more trips next year. Rob wants to go snapper fishing out near some small island as well. You are in for a treat with the dry its actually green over there and all the crops are looking good. They have had quite a bit of rain. You can rent boats at the mobil petrol station if you have a boat licence. You will also be suprised how much it has grown there are a lot of houses over where ours is in the blancheport estates now if you do a drive by ours is the one herbert edwards drive. cream big bricks and double garage blue and blue roof overlooking the bay. You will have a great time im sure. cheryl

The best oysters in Australia come from around the area. When I am down that way for work usually have orders for 30-50 dozen for others here at work. Will be down that way again early next month.

When I lived for a short time in Streaky there wasn't much hope of the town expanding too much because of poor water supply. The bore which serves the town was quite solid. You could have a slice of water instead of a glass.
They looked at a solar still back then, but I don't know what progress has been made in that area. Obviously everyone has tanks at their houses.
I lived in the main street next to the hall and Council offices, in a house attached to the bakery which burnt down. Sticky buns on the door step.
The site was still vacant when I went through in 2007, but the door step was still there next to the rose garden wall.
It's a great region of Australia. Bairds Bay, Haslam, Smoky Bay, the Cape, Point Labatt, Murphy's Haystacks etc. I love it but I can't stand the cold down there anymore. Cheers Chris

Chris where you were living the bakery is back over on that side of the road now next to the council. And they have mains water but still not drinkable its ok if you boil it but i use tank water when im there. I take back Neil and Lynne about you are in for a treat with the crops looking good. the eyre got hit by massive storms yesterday and millions of dollars worth of crops were lost which is very sad for them as it was looking good for being a rare very good year. cheryl

Yes Cheryl, I saw that on the news.  What a terrible thing to finally get a good crop and then it gets smashed.

Although most farmers take out insurance for crop damage, they will tell you that getting an insurance payout is nowhere near as satisfying as selling the harvested crop.

The way wheat prices are going I will be surprised if there is much sown next year.

Cheers

The insurance never covers the actual loss.
It's very late to have such a huge ferocious storm. Poor buggers can't win. Lucky a lot of them have connections in the oyster industry.
The same thing happened after a 4 year drought. The headers were almost in the gate with the comb down, and the rain came down instead. Heartbreaking.
I look forward to a Streaky sticky bun when next I'm passing that way.
Cheers Chris
