Ok, so its the first weekend in the new house that we dont have visitors, appointments, tradesman or gardening to do, so lets go off in the van.
Just a short trip, about 1 hour to the local dam. Red alert for Blue green algae, no good for the dog or fishing. Well lets travel 2 hours to free camp on the river, still good for dogs and fishing.
Just a minute, the boss says I can have Tuesday off as well. So lets travel 4 hours to the coast, good for the dog, good for the fishing, and we can catch up with the grand kids.
So here I sit, in the sun, hubby fishing, and the family about to arrive for a picnic lunch. Cant get much better than this surely.
So my question is, how do others decide how far to travel for various lengths of time, eg 2, 3, 4 days etc. The biggest problem I have when we do this is, I dont want to go home. Can we please just keep travelling?
There is a group of us who go away most long weekends, and we take it in turn to pick the location. The only criteria is, maximum of 4 hours from home.
yeah we felt the same when on our maiden voyage in the tardis.. but couple weeks were of to Condobelin , then end of october SA all good , just enjoy while you can I guess
I keep saying the same old thing over and over, you dont have to go far to "get away"
we often just do a couple hundred km's and rip up to a few gorges that we know of or we continue further into wilpena
from there we may decide to shoot up to parachilna and from there on who knows?, the desert country always beckons me
just a short drive away from home and it doesnt make much difference if you are a million miles from home (as we are now, with the daunting start back home tomorrow) or just around the corner, as long as you are out and about, it's all good!!
I only travel for a few hours to get to somewhere nice, I like the NSW South Coast and it's within easy reach of Canberra just for a getaway....

We been interstate alot.......now we concentrating on 2-3 hours max each way for a weekend trip...going to loxton...Oct long weekend.........and Burra.....in November before it gets too warm.
We do a once a year "big" trip but apart from that we go 2 to 4 hours from home for long weekends. It is amazing what you can find to do in your "backyard". Helps the local communities as well. Our next trip is to Koonoomoo on the Murray over Melbourne Cup weekend. Really is between Cobram and Tocumwal but I like the name. Nothing there but the river. Great. Other spots include Toora in South Gippsland and Taggerty near Eildon. All beaut places. Maybe see you at one of them sometime.
Terry.

I just hop in Rosy (my cruiser) and head up to the tablelands, or south, or north ....... leaving the van in the park. Last weekend I went down to the boardwalk and boat harbour. Some friends invited me down for coffee, but I missed them completely. I wandered around the marina checking out all the multi-million dollar super yachts and huge sail boats, and started chatting to a young bloke wetting a line off the jetty. I was shocked to see him using king prawns for bait, until he explained he's a chef and they were left over from his kitchen. I forgave him. We started chatting and it turned out he was a Whyalla and Pt. Lincoln boy. The world's getting smaller. He didn't catch much, but he was taken for a long, hard walk down the jetty by an eagle ray which he hooked on the wing. It was a beautiful animal, extremely protected. He cut it free to "fly" again. About 2 hours later I strolled to the nearby cafe and "shouted" myself a Copper's Pale Ale and a plate of yummy chips. It didn't cost much, but I had a great time. Nuh, you don't have to go far. Cheers Chris
