Anyone been there recently? Plan to stay at the Henty Bay CP - thoughts? And for 2 extra points why would Basil want to go to Portland?

Good Evening Basil - havent been there recently, but it is only an hours drive from our home town of Mt Gambier. It is a busy port with ships coming in to pick up either wood chips or sheep, plus busy fishing fleet. There are some beaut old buildings. Weather would obviously be a bit chilly at present though. I rather like that coastline along great ocean road. Cant comment on van park, as have only been there on day trips. Cheers, Colleen
Basil would want to go to Portland because he knows someone who owns a brewery there??
I'm with you Colly I like the area. Beaut part of the world. Like you I have never stayed there only travelled through so sorry Bas................can't help you.

Yep, we only travelled through too Basil. Actually stayed at Mt. Gambier for 4 days.
Make sure you take the tram trip in Portland, very informative and beaut views.
Loved Mt. Gambier stayed at the CVP up on the top of the hill sort of overlooking the lake. We even walked around the whole perimeter of the lake...........AND BEFORE BREAKFAST.

There's a beaut little van park at Narawong, about 8kms east of Portland. Very congenial, and a very pleasant location in a little village off the main drag. Price was ok too. It's nestled behind some low sand dunes, surrounded on 3 sides by a creek. Very peaceful, placid, comfortable, and it's ok too. You choose. It's a nice area though. Lots of history, not too many people, albeit, they are Vics.

have to agree with Ma and Dave. the blue lake c/van park is beautiful with great views and easy parking. we stayed the other end of town but checked it out when we looked at the blue lake. Of all the places we have seen in our short time caravanning Mnt Gambier is our favorite. could easily live there or just out of town.

Am so pleased to hear you folk like my hometown!! FYI many folk from Adelaide Melbourne and other places, have retired to the "Mount", obviously selling their homes for a profit in the cities and either relocating to a home or into our wonderful lifestyle village there. We also have definite seasons, and have plenty of water. Shopping is pretty good, and of course we have the best crayfish and wine in Australia!!!!! Can't wait to get home, having been away since end of February. Cheers Colleen
another one of our favorite stomping grounds, worked down there felling trees and driving the log trucks into apcel many years ago, got done for a 10 ton overload, gave false name and address and cleared off otherwise I would still be down there
that was back in the days when it rained for 5 days and dripped off the trees for the other two, not good driving weather in an old "b" model mack with only a steel mesh for a windscreen coming in from mt burr to apcel 6 times per day (if we were lucky, we were paid by the load)
Well it apears I had more luck with the Spanish movie thread.... But one of you has guessed the reason for my trip to Portland.....

Narrawong CP is great! Don't miss a visit to Bridgewater Bay, west of Portland. Drive to carpark at end of road, walk to the Springs - magic. Very scenic place.
Basil, if you really have to stay in or near Portland, take a warm wind-proof coat with you! We stopped there for lunch last March and were nearly blown away. We went on to stay at Nelson, where it was much more sheltered. Good Luck!
Stayed at Henty Bay just a couple of weeks ago. (It's one of the two pet friendly parks in Portland). Part of the FPA group.
We found the park to be very pleasant, grassy sites and right on the beach. Good amenities and friendly staff - it's about a 10 minute drive into town, and very quiet.
I live 1 hr from Portland in Warrnambool Portland isa great spot and the Henty CP should be fine and although we haven't stayed there it looks good from the road.
Other spots as per others - Narrawong CP excellent - you can camp right beside the river and very protected from the weather that we are having at the moment. Good fishing apparently. Kywong CP Nelson again excellent and again away from the strong winds we are having. Great fishing in the Glenlg river.
Sorry can't guess why you are wanting to go to Portland.
There is a free guided tour of the aluminum smelter that is well worth doing. You do need to book at the tourist information centre as it is very popular. Great free camp at Saw Pit State Forest about 20K's out of Portland, its in the bible.

Not for the fishing Granny. You know I went to a barramindi farm near Wonga beach where you could catch a Barra - I was the only person in a group of 20 who could not even get a bite....
