What is wrong with this picture?

On the back of a small Hyundai three door car was a sticker which read:

Buy Australian
Use it or Lose it.

Is it just me or....................................???

Talking about the iron ore and coal used to manufacture it, no doubt.

Or maybe the air in the tyres.

trouble with that statement is that to buy australian in this day and age is a very hard thing to do, to gain the "made in australia" logo it only has to have 18% australian content or just assembled in australia

the whole system is wrong, I support my local producers where and when I can, I go a long way to do so, butchers as well as fruiterers but I dont like to be ripped off either, I was paying a "premium" for what I thought were locally produced jams and pickles only to find "george" out the back filling his little jars out of a chinese drum, the only thing locally produced there were the bloody labels on the jar

I also support our local producers market but was dissapointed locally at the wirrabara market to find a mob from gawler owned two shops and a lot of their produce was imported

I have a council meeting tonight and I will be bringing up this "local producers market" issue, I will be demanding that all produce and goods at our local farmers market be indeed "local" and not shipped in from other towns and citys,

"australian" made should mean exactly that, made, assembled, packed using aussie workers and sold right here in australia in australian stores

it's an unfair minefield out there,

rant over, soap box returned to corner, self admonishment duly administered, apoligies duly noted in minutes, medication administered!, unca Dave quiet now!

Maybe the driver was Australian? 4 seater? 1 occupant = 25% so therefore fully Australian....

I know Dave very sad state of affairs.....I don't mind if at "Farmers Markets" the goods sold are indeed Australian grown, not necessarily in my neighbours allotment but I deliver lectures to people selling ""homemade" jam, Chutney, sauce etc purportedly locally made but when you check under the check ginham bit of cloth that invariably accompanies such items and discover that the product is actually imported from CHINA..... You can imagine the uproar.... Next time you are @ Mogo or Berrima have a look you will be surprised....
Last great one I saw was on a can of Letona peaches - under closer inspection the can had "product of Greece" on it, under strange circumstances the entire shelf full of canned fruit fell onto the floor and all the tins seemed damaged to me, a point I did make to the security person who attended this catastrophe, as she was escorting me from the shop......
Only those with something to hide engage in these deceptive practises.....
I thought your soap box oratory was well placed and well though out Dave, next time you see something like this though be like me, become a man of ACTION. The interesting thing with the peaches it was later discovered was that only this retailer was selling those greek peaches branded Letona exacry the same contents in their own "Select" brand....

Woohoo..!! Love it when DaveO gets the soapbox out!! Should be more of it. Admonishment or apolgies certainly not required!! We agree with everything you say...perhaps not enough swear words used.......... but we agree.

Hell, we need to do something about the way things are done in this country!!

Basil....that is just the sort of thing we need for the revolution...........shops full of imported, dented cans and I guess that means every can would be dented. Do we actually can anything at all now?? Birdseye and Edgell are owned by overseas companies. So you left the shop with your head held high..................and your feet held higher? :) :) :) Love it!! Well done.

Damn.......I should have asked her name justcruisin01 :) :) and yes...it was a female and yes...she was alone in the car. hehehehe

Well done Dave! I'm with all of you.
Coles tinned apricots - peeled. Australian tinned apricots still have their skins. Why?
I don't understand it. 220grams of fruit is 220 grams of fruit with or without skins. The skinless don't have the flavour either.
Kuranda up in the Daintree Rainforest has local market stalls and Australian souvenir shops.
The market stuff is not locally produced or hand made locally. Either China or Indonesia.
The souvenirs have Australia written all over them but not on the "Made in" label. That says China.
To make matters worse they're sold by the Vietnamese business and stall operators who send the money back to their home land. I doubt the GST even makes it to Canberra.
I'm confused to say the least.
We need to speak up at so-called farmers markets and let them know we know it's a crock of sh!t. Expose them for what they are - phonies.
If it's now available locally it's not on sale at that time. Keep the seasons in mind when doing these markets. Otherwise they're no more credible than our friendly supermarket monopolies.

I really felt like taking action Basil these buggers come in and set up thier stalls right at the entrance of the market (thereby grabbing the novice straight away) and then they usually have two or three stalls in strategic positions and all very proffesional looking, as you say, all produce done up in cute "country" style, the young player cannot avoid or resist them

I really felt like "spitting the old dummy" and flattening the lot as I see our true local laddys and lasses lose out to very consumer savvy sellers, the feeling was overwhelming to "evict and demolish" (crush, kill, destroy, as the robot once said off "lost in space") but alas I have become that which I have always fought against

i have been noninated for preselection for a position on our local council and thereby cannot be seen to act in a primitive fashion, and besides Jerry (our senior sergeant) was having a yak with me at the time about hoodlums on our street and he's bigger than me and he's got the gun, YIKES!!!!, I dont think it would have forwarded my circumstances to behave in a "hoodlum" like manner when I am trying to get such nonsense snuffed out

I will go about the corrections lawfully and in a supposed "civilised" manner, and in a way that is not likely to see me evicted from said premises or tasered

the problem is in the wording of "local" is it local as in very local or state local or nation local,

"wordwide parity" and the "level playing field" and of course who can forget "the world wide economy", is to blame

in this day of global finance the individual person and country is stamped to a mould and if you dont fit then you are ejected, as has happened with mitsubishi australia and many other little companys who cannot resist the call of a huge wad of cash or an underhand share buy out

all gets down to the almighty dollar, providing council gets it's $35 stall setup fee then council really does not care where the stall holders originate, I and a couple of others do however care and would much prefer the produce and the proceeds are grown and sold here and the money stays right here, keeps our youngsters working and well behaved and happy, you may however feel more than free to import as much spending money as you see fit and place it into local producers hands

makes me very angry when I see mom and dad and their offspring being undercut and outsold by blatant money making procedures, I will try to change this tonight along with a couple of other things, providing of course that i do not get "ejected" from council again

well once again I have gone into another blind dribble spread, my fingers are faster than a school boy's fingers on his first date, my brain will catch up around 5 o'clock and think "WHAT THE????"

just as an update to our little council meeting (which I might add got a wee bit heated and alas I was yet again evicted from forthwith)

I quote "in the interest of having a larger selection, or clientel base, for the travelling or home based populace we will continue receiving nominations from stallholders who are in our immediate council district and will look upon other interested parties submissions as more stall positions become vacant or should it be found that the current stalls are not beng fully utilised" end of quote

having only roughly 10 "local" producers our "stalls" are never going to be fully utilised despite my opposition as well as three other interested partys the overwhelming "fly in's" are going to continue, maybe Basils seek and destroy method is the best, even if it only to bring attention to the rubbish on offer

Dave can't you be devious? I mean a simple complaint to the Police that you saw vehicle rego No racing with Vehicle rego No... Which No's you had copied down at the "Fair"... the Law will have a word about the allegations made and they may decide that it's just not worth the risk of going to town....
DIRECT ACTION Dave, always saves the day - just be prepared to be arrested!

been very tempted many times to, well, not break the law but maybe strain it a bit, but I am in a very ticklish situation in that I have so many, lets say "high profile commitments" including a very close relationship with a lot of charity organisations and a very close affiliation to handicapped persons state and nation wide that if I was to get a criminal conviction against me of any kind then these priviliges could and would be withdrawn

this would kill me as I live and breathe for these folk, without my work involving these fantastic people I have nothing to get up for, I have my "day job" and my "counselling" and my freinds and weekend work but without my interaction with my "special" family then just unplug me I'm done

I have declined the preselection for council, I feel big business has a large foothold in there and the honest caring folks have no place in that world, I will find other ways of "pushing my barrow" maybe setup my own stall with a "spruker" or "town cryer" pronouncing to all and sundry the logic and benefits of buying from "local folk", and maybe denouncing the "blow in's" no law against self promotion that I am aware of

I used to knock up a lot of fantastic toys years ago and I couldnt keep up with demand so maybe it's time to get out in the shed more, time will be the limiting factor, takes a long time to make a good looking frog
