THIS GIVES US SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT WITH ALL OUR NEW ELECTRONIC TECHNOLOGY. GPS
A couple of weeks ago a friend told me that someone she knew had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard. When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen. The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents. SOMETHING TO CONSIDER IF YOU HAVE A GPS - DON'T PUT YOUR HOME ADDRESS IN IT. PUT A NEARBY ADDRESS (LIKE A STORE OR GAS STATION) SO YOU CAN STILL FIND YOUR WAY HOME IF YOU NEED TO, BUT NO ONE ELSE WOULD KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE IF YOUR GPS WERE STOLEN.
CELL PHONES
I never thought of this....... This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her mobile phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cell phone, credit card, wallet etc, was stolen. 20 minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says 'I received your text asking about our pin number and I replied a little while ago.' When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text 'hubby' in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account.
Moral of the lesson:
DO NOT DISCLOSE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN YOU AND THE PEOPLE IN YOUR CONTACT LIST. AVOID USING NAMES LIKE HOME, HONEY, HUBBY, SWEETHEART, DAD, MOM, ETC. AND VERY IMPORTANTLY, WHEN SENSITIVE INFO IS BEING ASKED THROUGH TEXTS, CONFIRM BY CALLING BACK. ALSO, WHEN YOU'RE SENT A TEXT BY FRIENDS OR FAMILY TO MEET THEM SOMEWHERE, BE SURE TO CALL BACK TO CONFIRM THAT THE MESSAGE CAME FROM THEM. IF YOU DON'T REACH THEM, BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT GOING PLACES TO MEET 'FAMILY AND FRIENDS' WHO TEXT YOU.
*PLEASE PASS THIS ON* I never had much thought about the above before but as of now, no longer have 'home' listed on my cell

It's great advice, but very sad we have to learn about these things the hard way. Why is it there are people out there who think they have the god-given right to just take what other people have worked hard to own? Why can't we trust anyone anymore? It's very sad. The couple who lost their van in Qld must be in shock and heart broken. What audacity! I'm going to get a tow hitch lock asap. Bring back honesty and respect, and hurry up!

Very good safety points Mr Duck. Not a quack amongst them! Another thing we have always done is, when booking into a club whether near home or interstate we never put our home address on the temporary membership ticket. We always put my work address. Its worked so far! Probably mozzed myself now.

Thanks Carol for checking the validity of the story.....whilst only partly true the story still may give us something to think about when it comes to the security of our stuff.
The Snopes site suggested by Carol http://www.snopes.com/ is an excellent site to check out the urban myths that "do the rounds"
Very good advice Terro...............Never did think of that one.!!
We really do have to be so damned careful nowadays and just keep thinking about what we are doing!!
You are right...............bring back the respect...................I just wonder how we can do that?

Thank the do-gooders years ago who had the rights of parents & teachers to disapline kids ,teach right from wrong & self respect taken away . What did they expect to happen???????????????????????????
Now those kids are producing the street kids of today .
I beleive we earn our rights as we go through life ,not have them given to you the day you are born
I may be from the old school but i can live with that.
The only ones penalised for this behavour is us ,the ones trying to do the right thing .
Just have a look at the restrictions on outdoor social activities every where we travell, The famous NO NO NO SIGHNS are every where .
All because of antisocial behavour . It appears to be easier to put up NO NO singns than to stand up & sort out this problem .

I can't see how that would be a fake Carol. Maybe that particular story is, but the possibity of something like that happening certainly would be there. So as Jim said it was designed to give us something to think about. :)
You know Justcruisin James...... that it is always easier to control the masses than the few.
eg: When we have a few people sitting around and drinking and making pests of themselves we simply make the area a dry zone and ban everyone rather than control the ones that are actually causing the problems.
No-No signs are cheap....................Police patrols must be too expensive!
I'm with you about the dooooo-gooooder!! (there again...is a minority and the government listen to them because the masses stay silent)

Whether these are urban myths or not if they can prevent any problems or are perceived to prevent problems they must be good. I will keep doing what I'm doing until proven wrong.

Thanks Carol..............................No offence taken at all. My reply may have sounded like I took offence but I didn't............hence the smile on my post.
It is always good to know what is fair-dinkum and what isn't. The thought was good. hehehe.

I honestly dont think the thieves are that smart they simply flog and sell, but an ounce of prevention and all that,
it may just pay to heed the above advice even if it is not in fact, fact,
to be honest I have all that info on my GPS and my phone, we as a society must become more "aware" and if it takes a bogus email to alert us to a "possible" threat then so be it!
I for one will be taking all personal info off my GPS and my phone "just in case"
I dont know how I will find "home" without "naggin nancy" but oh well I'll just keep going till I come in the back through Darwin again! Oh the bother of it all!
Now Dave, if you're travelling south on the Main North Highway just turn right at the well sign-posted intersection. If you're travelling north just turn left at the southern well-signposted intersection. Can't miss it. I haven't been that way for about 5 years, but I still remember it. We used to stop at Warnertown for fuel and food on our frequent trips to Lincoln. I'm sure you won't get lost, you just have to register the "home" address as something else for Nancy to follow. I have Tom. He's the only bloke I take directions from, after I've programmed him first. I couldn't stand to have a refined English woman or US drawler telling me where to go. It just wouldn't be right. Ha ha ha
