Is this something we should all read at least once a week?

Written By Regina Brett, 90 years old, of The  Plain Dealer, Cleveland, Ohio

"To  celebrate growing older, I once wrote the lessons life taught me. It is the most-requested column I've ever  written."  My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:

1.  Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3.  Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and  parents will. Stay in touch.

5.  Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree..

7.  Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.

8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

9.  Save for retirement starting with your first pay check.

10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance  is futile.

11.  Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.

13.  Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

14. If a relationship has to be a  secret, you shouldn't be in it.

15.  Everything can change in the blink of an eye.  But don't worry; God never blinks.

16.. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

17.  Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

19.  It's never too late to have a happy childhood.  But the second one is up to you and no one else.

20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an  answer.

21.  Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

22.  Over prepare, then go with the flow.

23.  Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple..

24.  The most important sex organ is the brain.

25.  No one is in charge of your happiness but you.

26.  Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In  five years, will this  matter?'

27.  Always choose life.

28.  Forgive everyone everything.

29.  What other people think of you is none of your business.

30.  Time heals almost everything. Give time time.

31.  However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

32.  Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

33.  Believe in miracles.

34.  God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.

35.  Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

36.  Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.

37.  Your children get only one childhood.

38.  All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

39.  Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

40.  If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.

41.  Envy is a waste of time. You already have all  you need.

42.  The best is yet to  come.

43.  No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

44.  Yield..

45.  Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.."

46. No one's success is at your expense; share their joy and it will eventually come to you.

How true is that? There are a few of those getting around and I like them. They are a good reminder for us. Be thankful !!

I cried because I had no shoes,
Then I met a man who had no feet.

Personally I like no.21 I'm just going through my wardrobe now looking for my lingerie............. :) With my luck the bloody candles will burn the house down...........oh well...........back to the wardrobe!

Only if you are open minded and cynical enough to recognise it for the scmaltz that it is.

I read this "offering" a few years ago and put in the same category as Readers' Digest tripe and American evangelical clap-trap.

Observing what actually happens to so many people in real life, as opposed to the lives of the well-to-do working and middle classes of countries such as ours, it comes across as first class pseudo christian hypocrisy.

No guilt trip, but have a look at what the Salvation Army, the Police and the Emergency Services, amongst others, deal with every day.

No, it is not a good life for a greater part of the population around the world, many of whom have no possibility for escape from their difficult existences.

Consider yourselves extremely lucky that the Global Economic Downturn did little more than cause you to defer spending on non-essentials for a year or two.

DD, you caught me in the middle of a fumble-fingered attempt at editing out the real angst and ire that I feel when I read this kind of rubbish.

Mustn't upset people, you know.

cynical pair of twerps, I like reading this "dribble" it gives me a small "lift" I remember little bits of it and they often come out at the strangest of places at later times

I also like 21 only because when we were first married and earning a good income with long term "prospects" I cleared up my mothers debt at the local four square store, it was only $150 or so, not a lot but the store credit is a trap, once you "book up" then when next fortnight comes along you must pay last fortnights account thus leaving no money for this fortnight, we've all been there

I also left a big brown plastic Teddy bear on the fridge, I would put all my pay in there bar what we needed for our travels, I told mum to use what she wanted to get what she wanted, first time I ever seen mum in a new dress, dad worked on the council as a grader operator and money was tight, I was a heavy plant operator in the mines earning 5 times what they were

anyway at the same time we bought mum a huge set of various glass things in a big box, simply because mum was old school, nothing went to waste and we used Vegemite jars as glasses as well as mismatched bowls for desert and none matched, all the other glasses were higgledy piggledy

so we bought this huge set and gave it to her, when mum died, some 20 years later we found this bloody set, still in its original blue box under the bed untouched, she hadn't used it, still kept all the old non matching glasses, she told the sisters it was "too good to use"

I agree with don't keep anything for best, use it now because you never know!

It is because we do live in a lucky part of the world and we have good lives that we are able to read posts like the Gnomes. So I think we should be thankful and every now and again be reminded ...............wether it is by looking around or reading a post.............of just how lucky we are!!

oh please dont mention ducky in that Teddy, I have to have the steering wheel in close to my stomach just to keep ahead of the game, the mere mention of that thing makes it very awkward to steer, oh Damn, too late, it's like running a stick into a wagon wheel!

Ducky in a Teddy, sounds like a creepy game that an old pervert would play with some kids toys!

I take those lists as a reminder of how lucky I am.
Some days I feel quite grey, but then I see someone much worse off than I, and when my guilt subsides for feeling down, my gratitude returns.
I have no right to feel "grey".
This is my favourite line our of all those lines -
"Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about."

I agree that it is a bit "schmaltzy" (we can thank the Yiddish language for that word), given that she is in fact 53 years old, not 90!

Heres a cut and paste from her column....

Regina Brett's 45 life lessons and 5 to grow on

By Regina Brett

May 28, 2006, 10:13AM

To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me.

It is the most-requested column I've ever written. My odometer rolls over to 50 this week, so here's an update:

etc, etc.....
