hi all is there any one out there currently working their way a round the big circuit if so how hard is it to find work. reason i ask wife and i usually travel 3 months of the year and work the rest of the time we make enough money to travel with out working. our finances have taken several big hits this year and it looks like we might have to give traveling a miss next year. the alternative is to work some and play some, or work longer and holiday shorter. i think i would rather be out there than working at home. we are not fussed what work we do so long as pays enough to put fuel in tank. have a nice day al
Al, there are so many options out there, from my own experience. Plan ahead - the route, the destination, the time frame. Then check out the job opportunities available on the internet and in the newspapers etc. Make enquiries, even explain your plan and register your interest I'm guessing, but you'd only be looking for casual work - a few weeks in one place, and then move on. Some of those places will have space and power where you can park up. Outback roadhouses, cooking, cleaning, handyman, tyre fitter; stations & tourist destinations, handyman; driver, caravan parks, supermarkets of course. Truck driving depending on your qualifications. Some places will even throw fuel into the deal. It will depend on your skills and abilities as well. If one of you were "wise" enough to be a hairdresser, you could do it on site or provide a mobile service in the community where you're parked. Selling craft at markets is a possibility, but it may be a slower income generating activity. Welding or building could also get you a long way. Good luck with that.

Geez Granny, you've covered a whole heap of alternatives there. I will keep them in mind when we start travelling after work. Great reply. Are you keeping well up there in cyclone land?

What cyclones? It's not too humid, and there's only been a bit of rain over the weekend. It's boring up here compared to Broome and Kimberleys in the build up and wet season. The west has spectacular thunderstorms and lightning shows most evenings. Last year there were only a couple of thunderstorms and torrential, tropical downpours here, and there haven't been any thunderstorms here yet. Hopefully the cylcones will give Cairns a miss this wet season. I don't mind the squalls and the thunderstorms, but I hate cyclones.
Those work ideas are from my own observations over the years. I didn't mention fishing boats because there aren't many left. With governments buying back licences, catch limits and season restrictions being imposed it's a much smaller industry then it used to be in the 70's when I worked on trawlers for a season. DeBe can relate this this. Those "kill the pig" days are gone. So shore-based is better.

Last year we were in NT/WA .there was work every where /of all kinds ,
locals had all gone to the mines ,may have changed with now due to the crash .
We are not working , but had a job offered in broome , had never seen any one pleading for us to stay & work .even offered to pay accomodation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Theres lotsa Grey Nomads travelling with their dogs, and sometimes that presents a problem when entry into a National Park or other tourist event is precluded for said pooches. Perhaps you could do some "pooch-sitting" for a small fee for fellow travellers?
There is also harvest work. Not all of it is back-breaking. We worked in the sorting and packing shed in a mango harvest. It did a lot more than just pay for the fuel! Mango season starts in the NT and Kununurra in August/Sept for a couple of months. By then, the Qld season has started, so it is possiible to do this for maybe 4 months. A fork lift ticket is valued in harvest sheds. Usually quite a bit of tourist related seasonal jobs up north. Often they are not advertised via conventional means, but you find help wanted ads stuck in windows, and the like. Or one can ask when staying at popular, remote places, if they want staff. In recent years, I've observed numbers of help wanted ads in Broome, Kununurra, Katherine, Batchelor, Alice Springs. Google the NT Times and find their jobs section - from Feb on some ads for resort, caravan park work, etc, in the Top End, do appear. Once you get "into" a work scene, word of mouth often ensures other offers, opportunities.

You must have building skills or similar. Broome's always looking for people in the building trade. The workers come and go, some stay and the rest go to the mines as well. The prospect of those big dollars is too much to resist, until they learn about the hours and conditions.
