Hi Ladies, Saw this site and I just had to drop in. I am a solo RVer as well. I have had trailers, Pop-up, and now a 35' motorhome. If I can help anyone out there with questions, been doing this for about 20+ yrs. I am also a good cook and great at chopping wood for the fire. I have just graduated from riding quads to riding in a Polaris Ranger Side x Side. If any of you out there are in AZ, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado area and hate to 4x4 alone let me know. I live to RV and ride
Well, welcome to Australia's Grey Nomads Forum. Nice of you to drop in. You certainly are decked out for travelling. Is the Polaris allowed on the open road, or is it just for exploring off road? With a 35ft motorhome, do you fit into caravan (trailer) parks or do you have to find bigger areas to park in? Can you be stand alone with your own power supply? Sorry to ask so many questions, but I believe things are different in the USA than here in Oz. Take care and safe travel. Cheers

I have the Ranger which is "street legal" and in AZ we can ride them downtown like a car, but usually don't because of the nobbie tires. It is like a mountain goat off road. I also have a Jeep Wrangler I use in CO. I have a 5K watt generator in the motorhome and I can stay out until the black tank fills up and the fresh water is gone. Usually about 8 days before I have to dump and pump. I dry camp or boondock 99% of the time. I hate RV parks, but I can get into them easily, cause most have pull thru's. The inverter lets me charge everything up and I can turn off the gennie at "quiet time" and still watch TV.
Welcom to our forum DesertRider. As cruising Granny said...you have a wonderful set up by the looks of it. I'm sure you have some stories to tell about your travels. I, for one, would love to read about a few of them. Cheers,
Have you driven the "Alcan" to Fairbanks AK? I was in Alaska a few years back and thought that was one trip I'd like to do.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I get the impression from travelling around USA that the RV parks are somewhat basic compared to ours here. I noticed that motorhomes, trailers (caravans) and 5th wheelers are mostly self contained so park facilities are less of an issue.
The last few years has seen a big trend towards self contained (en-suite) rigs here too.
RV parks here are set up with water & electric hookups as well as septic dumps for each site. They are running about $28-$50/night. That's why my group always boondock when we can. I retired in 2004 from the Government with 32 yrs. of service to include Navy time of 12 yrs. At least every other month, we go out and 4X4 and camp for about 10 days at a time. Then we need to dump the black water and refill the fresh. For the most part, we all carry 5K-6K generators so we are all self sufficient Our stays are usually in the White Mts. of northern AZ. or lower Utah. In May 2010, we are going to Alaska via the Vancouver, Whistler, Prince George and on to Chicken and then Fairbanks. From there we are going down to Denali, Anchorage, Homer. Seward and back home. It's about 10,000 miles in 60 days.
What a great trip that will be....Alaska is awesome
Here's a photo I took of Denali from the main highway south of Fairbanks in 2005, best to allow some time there as visibility can be poor some days in summer, often cloudy and often smokey from bush fires
(for the benefit of fellow GNs Denali, aka Mt McKinley, is the highest mountain in N. America at over 21,000 ft)
Like Jimricho we experienced Alaska in 2003. Seeing the RV's there was what got us thinking to get back to caravanning after a lot of years travelling OS. Although not Alaska the attached picture was taken from the "Rocky Moutaineer" train as we approached Banff BC.
