Hi Roamin, Tell me more. I'm in the process of purchasing a Garmin Nuvi 765 so I'm interested. I tried to "get into" the site you refer to but the site was "down" when I tried.

Yes site down i just checked .
Its about points of interest may be petrol,Banks,Fast Food Outlets etc etc etc.
I would just check back now and then.

Didn't think I needed a GPS but got one when FlyBuys had an offer and we had some spare points. A Tom Tom 1. It is useful, when driving trucks I was fairly familiar with most of the major cities main routes and needed a library of street directories for the side streets etc. The Tom Tom or Tom as we call him is very useful and replaces a few books. Also the information on the screen is handy like getting an accurate speed, time to destination, weather report, stock market news, sorry got carried away I made the last two up but you get my drift. I wouldn't have bought one initially but now I have one it is useful.

Great for travelling.

Absolutley... what if you need to call an ambulance out in the sticks, they will find you if you give the 000 operator your coordinates...

of course you need one, I have the Garmin nuvi wide 760 (old stock so I got it cheap)

fantastic bit of kit it avoids all main highways and with the camps australia 5 poi file it finds all the free camp spots for me as well

stops a lot of arguments with the dragon as well, makes going around in cities a breeze!

You don't NEED a gps, but once you have one you will wonder how you ever lived without it.

I like mine (tomtom) because no matter how many times I disregard her (the voice) directions, she never loses her cool, no admonishment, no histronics, she just recalculates the route and gives new directions, cool as you like. Unlike my previous navigation device which I won't name in case she comes in the room smile

They are excellent for what they do but I still cannot totally rely on the directions given without confirming in my own mind that the directions are correct. as an example, a few weeks ago, leaving Ceduna heading for Streaky Bay Tom told me to follow Eyre Highway to Poochera then turn right to Streaky....200 odd kms. We all know to turn right just out of Ceduna and it is 110 kms.

Having said that it is almost perfect in any city or urban area which is primarily what it is designed for.

If you get on, make sure that, in Options, set it to show Fastest route not Shortest. You will keep more hair on your head that way. DAMHIK smile

When I set out from Broome I didn't think I'd need a GPS. Then I arrived in a strange town like Geraldton, and I saw the light of day. Tom's now my best friend and travelling companion.
I'm still a bit dubious about some of his instructions.
"In 800metres turn right. Turn right".
It's a gate into a bush paddock. Dirty misleading little bugger!
And Albany was a nightmare for Tom and I. The streets have been changed but the GPS provider hasn't been updated. A dead end cul-de-sac with a very small turn around at the top of a very steep hill. Fortunately the verge and footpath area was very wide. Rosy, Roma and I managed to get ourselves out. Not happy but.
The info the GPS provides is priceless when travelling alone. It's very hard, and dangerous to read a map while towing a van down the main drag of a strange town or city.

How else are you going to know when you are lost??

Yes Basil........when you give the operator on 000 the co-ordinates.......is this provided you have dialled the 123 number

Yes they are not perfect. I have an elcheapo and it finds roads that are not on the map, sends me the long way round etc.... I discovered though that it is cheaper to buy a new one these days rather than pay for the map updates. Pretty soon this technology will be so cheap you'll be getting the things in boxes of breakfast cereal. Remeber when they first came out? they cost $5000 and you had to use a CD with the maps on, now you can get a 4.5" screen one from ALDI for $158.....

Yes they are a sensible thing in cars...

ALDI.............still not seen that name here........not often I get lost.....My daughter has a Tom Tom.....and is constantly getting the inners repaired.......software keeps dying.

after firefighting.all these years...I can find my way around a map....I've seen it work like Granny says........turn left here 100mtrs.....you know thats wrong...you know you gotta turn right....plus all they do is block your vision..LOL

Im with you Basil I use a cheep NavMan in a few years I will just replace it rather than update data as it costs too much. The main prob is with her indoors she recons i ignore her instructions now because i ignore the female voice in the GPS when it keeps telling me to do a U turn just because it hasnt picked the route i want. Theres nothing quite like an argument betwean a real woman & an electronic woman. Hell i hope she doesnt read this. Cheers chaps

Oh can we do better for an old Vet sez I. O! can do sez he. How about $395 & a case. Up to the front we go pay for it. One very happy Popeye.

Basil you have hit on a good point ree GPS for emergency situations .some time when driving on the highway i would wonder what instruction I would be able to give regards the to where I was if I had to call in an emergency , but has you say Basil with a GPS you can pin point the spot thus quicker response time to the incidence . I have been in the hot set has a call taker many times and not much fun for the caller or the call taker ,when mobile phone first came in people would call in grass fire car fires and accident most of the time they did not have a clue where they were only the highway they were on and the last town they had passed through , Basil it is a good point we should kept that in mind if calling for help

Further to your reply Brickies,do you recall the recent NSW 000 call that the operator scrubbed because the farmer who called could not supply a street number.A GPS and cordinates would have given the Ambo exact directions.I am not too sure if the patient survived or not,I recall that it may have been a heat related incident.On my way to Aldi this am to purchase the GPS that they have on special.The GPS maps are supplied by Sensis?any good?.Cheers.Ibbo.

Well done Popeye... Good guys give discounts to Veterans and Seniors. When you are bargaining look at the eyes, the pupils dilate when you are at the best price you are going to get. Now you know why car salesmen always wear sunglasses....

We went out this morning.Loaded address into Voice thats what I call our GPS.She the good looking one of the family Accused me of being in love with the new voice. No sez I Voice just saves time my love. More time for you to take in the Vista. My arm is still ringing & I had to pay for lunch. So what out guys

I was told that the early Aldi ones branded "Medion" were rebadged Mio units and the later ones are in fact rebadged Tom Tom's....

I tried to get inearly.No chance,walkers,goophers,trolleys etc blocking the way in.And that was only at the turn off for the Pacific Hwy.Nevertheless I will try again.Cheers Ibbo.
