Sydney Hobart yacht race

If anyone is interested in tracking the yachts to see who is doing what have a look here.

There is only 1.1 Nm between the top three at present, nice weather too.

I reckon I would give my right arm to be there on a boat, but I guess one armed sailors are not much use to them eh!

It's the only sporting event that interests me in the least. Haveing had some experience in Yachts in my younger days I appreciate the challenge. It's still a bit like standing under a cold shower cutting up $100 notes....

In boating terms Boat stands for "Bring Out Another Thousand"

Have and still do from time to time sail on a winner of the Syd to Hobart "Rival" she is now owned by Spence Carpenter on Karra-Garra Island Morton Bay . Even out of race trim it still has a very good turn of speed for an old girl.
Rag power not really me, I like the feel of that diesel throbbing under my feet.   A straight line is still the fastest way between two points, can't do that with Rag Power

I actually prefer the convolutions of a reciprocating steam engine in a boat

Nothing like the awesome magesty of a triple expanding engine @ 80 rpm....

56 NM to the finish for Alfa Romeo, he'll nearly be in port for happy hour.

Well, maybe late supper at his current 4.5 Kts

"Rag power" is great for casual, relaxing water time. I've not raced, but I do enjoy the placid serenity, and I suppose it was cheating in Boston Bay, and off Cable Beach.
On the other hand, a thumping diesel engine churning up the briney is a good feeling too, especially when the prawn nets are chokkas with the crushed asians - er.... crustaceans.
At the end of the day it's still all about dollars - spending them and earning them.

Your are right rag power is relaxing .  When I was a young fella , those were the days, twilight sailing on Darwin Harbour  or off the Lizard Island it was a real chic magnet you couldn't miss.  Now I'm much older  I need to do everything in a hurry just incase I miss out .  I fly rather drive as I power boat rather than sail .  I know at the end I will still not have done it all but I hope to be  well and truly fagged out when my number  is called

I had a 16 foot clinker built sail boat with an inboard single cylinder yanmar diesel, moored at the jetty I used to just cruise out to the schnapper wreck, catch a few and sail back in to the crab patch and go home with a couple of big reds and half a dozen crabs, time was not my enemy back then, but stupidly I sold it, days like today I wish I still had it,

nothing more relaxing than "messing about in boats"
