Yes i think you are correct, as we go to the murray and can not have our dog in vic but can have her over the river in nsw, and did you all know that in vic you may have your dog on the sand on the vic side up to the high water mark! as this area is classed as nsw.

I have got really psissed off at travelling a fair distance going into some place, only to find at the last bit, a no dog sign.

While I can understand to a point, there seems a mentallity to just put them up anyhow and wait for complaints.

As far as I am concerned you are on your own on this one Sue, there are plenty of places for dogs and national parks is not one of them.

I love my dogs but please let there be somewhere we can go without them

Sue, we manage the Belair National Park Caravan Park,a privatelly run park within the Belair National Park and it is apparently the only national and recreation park that allows dogs on leads. We are dog friendly under strict conditions and have not come across a problem yet with all size dogs. This is a beautiful area and can be enjoyed by all and the increase in patronage recently indicates that the park is lifting and the associated recreation facilities around us makes for an enjoyable experience so close to the city. We are not associated with the National Park so therefore we are not part of the National Park Pass system. The local residents enjoy this facility with or without their dogs but it would not take too many breaches for this concession to end.

We would gladly be part of the push to allow dogs in to state/national parks. Given the number of grey nomads out there travelling with their four-legged friends at any given time, we hope there is enough strength in our numbers to effect a change in this law.  From our observations, a well controlled dog whose owner cleans up after them is less likely to damage the environment than some humans!  Jan

You can take your dog into a national park, you are not allowed to let it out of the car though. State forests in NSW allowed dogs on leash last time I looked.
The problem is that there are a very high pecentage of irresponsible dog owners who take small, viscious yappy dogs camping and they give everyone a bad name, no one wants to be bailed up by a dog that barks incessantly. Barking Dogs disturb wildlife and how can you police this? Then there are the dog owners who refuse to clean up after their dogs and thats aboslutlery lovely to be in the vast wilderness, walk out of your tent and step barefoot into some dogs pooh!
Na lets keep Dogs under responsible control and leave the National parks to the wildlife.

There are plenty of places for dogs but national parks are not one of them. I know most owners are responsible and control their animals, but there are a lot that are not causing much stress for other people when all they want is to relax

dogs should be allowed in national parks as long as they are controlled, doesnt matter where you go there will always be idiots who do the wrong thing!
Responsible dog owners would willingly pay a fee to have their dogs in a national park.
At any campsite an uncontrolled pet is a pain in the butt

flasher. well said.uncontrolled kids are much more of a problem than controlled pets.

Good one Flasher.I totally agree and so do many caravan park owners.There are quite a few feral parents out there that think it is their God given right to leave the supervision of their kids to others while they get drunk and keep everyone else awake.

Sue, come to Belair where it has proven to work, good management in the National Park here and the lack of problems with dog control in our park show that it can be blended into the system. Stubborn views will never be overcome especially with the elderly which unfortunatelly i am now one.

Just found your thread with goldcoaster bumping it up.
Have just got myself a little mate, she is so tiny and as an adult will hardly get to 2 or 3 kgs. Intend travelling with her as a companion and free camping along the way so even though she will be unable to wander far from the van being on a lead and being so small, I would like to be able to park in the NPs if I find slomewhere nice to park overnight.
