Hi guys, just looking at the map, sorting a route north. Has anyone got any advice on how to get from Nrth Old over to Arnhem land. Question is, can you take a van across the Carpentaria Hwy, our do you need to go through Tennant Creek?
The last time I was on the Carpentaria, it was single bitumen to Heartbreak hotel and down to the Barky Roadhouse, and that was many years ago and should be better now.
I think the question is to get from Nth Qld to Cape Crawford. Only way I know other than the Flinders is the Savanna Way, in the gulf. Never done it but I am lead to believe its all dirt, prone to wet season 'alterations' and holdups, and pretty rough.
g'day Muzza, no you don't have to go via threeways. the gulf road from burketown to Borroloola .Cape crawford is not part of Arnhem land. There are only two roads into Arnhem land and you will need permits. Apart from the Gulag penninsular(which has limited access) arnhem land is not open to the public.
Not exactly sure where you want to go in Arnhem Land Muzza. From FNQ, you need to get to Pine Creek north of Katherine. From there to Jabiru in Kakadu is easy. It is then possible to get permits to drive from Jabiru to Nhulunby on the Gove Peninsula and some nearby areas. It is very difficult (for tourists) to get permits to other areas in Arnhem Land or to get to Nhulunby by any other routes.
Depends on why you want to go there and how hard you are prepared to try to get permission.
We travelled the Savannah in June 08 and it was dirt all the way. But it was amazing and we had no problems towing the Hawke.
We also went into Arnhem Land to Gurig National Park and to the Cobourg Peninsula. It was all amazing stuff. Its a long way in and not bad going if the grader has been through before you.

I must be a binge thinker. I do it a lot at times, then, not much at all.
A permit is needed to cross the Roper into Arnhem Land at proper bar.Thereis a mission just on the other side of the river called Ngukurr .We will be in this area in a couple of mths time .
As a point of interest to any one travelling in this area &along the gulf road the mission has doctors ,hospital if there should be an emergency . They also have a telestra tower , mobile service is good in the area .have used the phone many times while fishing there .you can call the mission if needed .there is a school & a store as well .
