See a lot of vans with jerry cans on the back. don't know the lawful side of it but the amount that are out there it seems to be OK. Perhaps someone with the knowledge will enlighten you.

Bradbury,
I checked this when i wanted to do the same with petrol in jerry can on back of my van i was told by my insurance company if its not breaking the law they would not worry about.
But PETROL may explode on impact if can is damaged , i live Victoria, things may have changed 5 years.

My understanding is that petrol in a bumper mounted jerry on a van OR car is illegal, but diesel is ok.

Something to do with the vulnerability of fire or explosion in the event of a rear ender prang.  Like, some of those little cars with the fuel tanks, and for that matter any rear passengers heads, are only mm's from the rear extremity of the vehicle are safe?  Come on!!

Cheers Neil

I dont know of any law stating it is illegal to carry "any" fuel on the rear of the vehicle providing it is in an "approved" container and is attached in a safe manner

we have dozens of vans come through here every year with all sorts on the back like Genny's, air-cons, tool boxes, extra tyres, petrol and diesel jerry cans and extra water tanks as well as a combination of aforementioned

I have personally built at least a dozen "add on's" to the rear of c/vans and all have passed regency without a hitch these contained fuel holders as well as "other stuff"

if it looks dangerous and was an obvious concern to other motorists then you would be snaveled
