Been siting back reading & enjoying the 'battle'.I never bother keeping score. We travel every opportunity we get,bit restricted because of Caz's medical checkup's,but they are now getting further apart so the trips are getting longer.Notice chicken Coop er has flown the coop.

It costs me roughly $60 a week for everything but rent, grog and fuel, and I've been off the grog for a few months for medical reasons of course.
All food and household items including a lunch at the shopping centre on shopping day, with or without a sticky bun come into that budget.
I have a cook up about every 10 or 14 days.
Today I cooked 1kg prime mince @ $7.50 approx per kg at the Butcher, not the s/market. I added some fresh veg, celery, parsnip, onion, green beans, 1/4 cabbage, carrots and some herbs and spices and garlic.
It made up 12 meals, most of which I'll freeze in my Waeco. Estimated cost $16 all up for the pot full. I zap them when it's time for a feed.
When I am on the road it costs me about the same because I already have my main meal, and a few extras for other meals such as cereal, porridge and bread.
It is possible to live and travel fairly cheaply with a bit of forward planning.
Every one has their own lifestyle and daily patterns, and no one wants to live beyond their means, whether it be a pension or a payout, or if they're still working.
Just make sure you don't jeopardise your health by cutting back on good quality, fresh food. Tinned or frozen will quickly get you fed, but fresh is best.

Just found this thread too countryroad, probably because you had not long posted in it and I went to modified first.
Found it very interesting, a shame some of the ones who started this thread don't seem to be around any more.
Did find of interest just how much some spend while on the road, way out of my league.
Maybe I should start another thread as these ones don't go up to the first page to be found.

I wrote the second post on this thread, and have just been catching up with all the later posts, hummmmm!
When I did the Cape York trip on the 200cc Honda Ag-Bike with two friends, we were just we all bought our bikes just for the trip, just for an adventure and a laugh. By necessity we had to travel rough, and very very light. We did not have much luggage space at all, and we all decided to live as simple and cheap as possible. Although we didn't resort to eating "road-kill" as two of the others did on a previous trip on postie bikes to Broom via Alice and Darwin and back to NE Vic. Yep, I didn't believe it ether til' I saw the photo's at a Ulysses meeting, gospel truth!
We mostly travelled away from civilization and expenses were mostly $30 per food and petrol.
We treated it as a challenge to live as cheap as possible without going hungry.

Typical daily food & costs were:
Breakfast- Wheatbix (cheapest cereal) with HT Milk (no fridge), plus coffea, total less than a Dollar.
Lunch- One tomato sandwich, with peanut butter in lieu of butter (remember no fridge), plus a cup-of-soup, and a slice of bread with peanut butter spread. Plus maybe an apple. Cost maybe $1.50
Dinner: Large can of chunky type soup (and sometimes a much cheaper noodles or rice type meal), maybe a slice of bread and peanut butter, plus coffea.
Cost about $3.00
Plus we usually had a morning and afternoon tea/coffea break. Cost maybe fifty cents.
Grand daily total about $6.00
twobob's first post (26/1/10) claims groceries cost $40 pw. This works out at $5.71 per day.
So I say his costing is perfectly feasible.
We saved heaps by avoiding alcohol, we had no fridge and couldn't afford the weight anyway, although we did "bot" a few from time to time, when fellow traveller's felt pitty on us.

My experience's revealed to me, that most of us tend to over indulge ourselves somewhat, simply because we can!

Yes, fishing saves me a lot of money when I travel, and I have even bartered fish for food and accomodation! I caught a big barra on the Gibb river road and then had a hole in the radiator. With a can of bars leaks , and some help from friends from Kunanarra, I made it to a station just off the road. I swapped the barra for a soldering job , which got me all the way back to Townsville, via Perth and Adelaide.As for costs, I find that fuel is the biggest cost(93hilux4wd diesel with slide on camper and tinnie-8klms to liter). Mysister says I do lightening tours and I am trying to slow down and smell the flowers. Having your own small business does tie you down abit, but one day................Thanks, Bill
