Hi all, Our forum is hosted by a third party and from time to time they sell advert banners which suddenly appear on our forum. Unfortunately, I cannot control the content of these banners - but some members have said that they were happy to just ignore them or to 'block popup boxes' in their browser. There is an option of making our forum an 'ad free' place; however there is a cost involved which is currently over our budget. We may have another look at it later on in the year.
Thanks for that info Cindy, my McAfee said this site is clean, my problem came from elsewhere obviously .... guess I've become a bit twitchy after the nonsense struck! Cheers,Denise :)
Banners can be sneaky things. They can be more than they seem. By setting a cookie in your browser they can track your individual likes and the sites you visit and where within those sites you go. From that it is possible to place banners up that are tailored to your very own likes. Clever hey! Banners especially for you ! One could always disable third party cookies...

just one thing to add to that, the info is then gathered and sold on to partys that use this info to annoy the crap out of you in new and different ways
And then there's phishing. My website ozcaravantagalong.com was taken off the air yesterday because someone had gone phishing. Another way of attacking good, clean sites. Is there no end to what this crooks will do? This wonderful technology is so useful and creates numerous opportunities, and then someone ducks and weaves around the anit-virus and spyware, and now you have to have "malware". My computer was scanned and has been cleared of ever having the problems. It came to our website through the host server. So nothing is safe, not even forums. If they can selectively add advertising banners, just what are they capable of?

Seanou, Could that also include middle aged slow of step and inebriated pirates and their captured wenches? wet wenches could lead to all sorts of problems. yours aye Jack.

I thought fishing (phishing) was throwing a line with bait in the water and trying to catch a fish? Oh silly me - its 2010 Now I have to learn how to "Phish" What the *! is going on? I'm afraid it gets more & more difficult to keep up with all this jargon. Who said there was not a generation gap- there always will be. Bring back the "Olden Days" I say! Oh well back to work, no phishing/fishing for me today!
Just this week ozcaravantagalong.com has been shut down by a phisher. The web site host actually shut us down until the problem was fixed yesterday. Damn nuisance to us and a serious threat to our computers. My site partner and I have scanned our computers and neither had the bug. It must have gone in through the host server. Yeah I know it's jargon, and I'm now becoming bi-lingual. English and computer language. There has been no threat to anyone on GN or any other contacts because my connection to my own site was shut down. The good guys learn about these things and devise ways of beating them, and before you know it there's another bug on the system. Just like hacking and viruses, these things have serious consequences to all who come in contact. While the aim is to access personal information they often fail, and just create a nuisance while the hosts clean up their sites. I now have "Malware" downloaded to add to my other security measures. Take care everyone.

If you're using Firefox, check out the "Flashblock" and Addblock" add-ons. Also don't click on the banner adds unless your spirit of adventure is more than mine is.

A shared hosting service such as that'n is cheap as chips, plenty adequate for a small forum like this'n, and provides you with phpBB forum software easily installed and configured for use.
No ads involved unless you want to add them yourself.
Often, with shared hosting services, you can use a small ad for the hosting service on your site, and if people click through and sign up with the service themselves you get cost-free hosting as a result.
ActiveBoard's 'ad-free' service is rather expensive in comparison.
