We will be leaving Adelaide at the end of May want to do some free camping on the way to Cairns has anyone got any info on this and also which would be the best route to take. Thanks Helena.
There's a few ways you can get to Cairns from there. I did the route up through Gawler and Burra, onto the Barrier Hwy to Broken Hill, late last year.
Then onto the Kidman Hwy to Bourke, Lightening Ridge, then NW to Roma. From there to Banana and into Rocky.
Each time I have gone this way, I have been under time constraints, and being a free camper, I did notice lots of potential stops. To go this way, you must like way outback and small towns. That country will be blooming now with the recent rains, but was very dry and dusty when I went through.
There are lots of free camps that will not be listed in camps, just have to keep your eyes open for them. I did note CP's along the way also, but obviously did not use them. The roads were surprisingly good, but there were lots of kangaroo's on the road out around Bouke. Even sheep!! I had to stop and rescue a day old off the road, as two road trains were coming from different directions, right for it.
From Rocky its up the coast, and the camps book will help you there.
We are leaving on wednesday doing a similar trip but going to Batlow in NSW first to see friends then heading up probably be in Cairns in about June for my 60th, turning left at some stage then turning left again to head home in about August. The camps 5 book has a lot of free site to check out but a lot of the time you will see free camps along the road keep your eyes open and ask other vanners they can give you ideas about the road ahead.. Have a good one in you see a Jayco with GYPSY WAGON on the back give us a call and say hello..
That's ironic Terry and Raelene, I hope to be in Edithburgh by that time, from Cairns. Not sure which way I'm going from here. It will depend on how much time I'm left with. We may pass on the way. Safe trip anyway. Chris
