My wife and I will be towing a van from Newcastle to Perth (and Back) in Oct/Nov arriving back early Dec. We would like any tips from those who have done it before. Time is not important we may leave earlier and get back latter. Are there any "must sees". We have no fixed routes except the nullabor and are very open to best ways to go.
G'day Rayza and missycb, you will need several cd's as there is practically no radio on the nullabor. fuel is expensive after ceduna,reaching 1.69/l for both petrol and diesel.(22-23march)could be more by oct.You will probably miss seeing the whales as they will be gone by then.Be prepared for some cold nights on the nullarbor(0-2 c.Food prices are astronomical. so is the beer, $6 for a stubby. I was told by the barman at ****lebiddy their liquor license is $30,000

No problem at all. We cruise at a max of 85kph. We are out there to see the country (and there is plenty to see, even/especially there), not to stare down a stip of black stuff.

We just arrived at Salmon Gums .. which is approx. 100 k's south of Norseman ..
Overall, with three vehicles, we mainly travelled between 80 - 90kph .. and on the open road across the Nullabour we travelled with vehicle 'spacing' of usually 300 to 500 mtrs. This enables the big rigs overtaking us, to pass quite easily. It was good travelling with the wind behind us all the way so far too ..

Someone told me the headwinds across the Nullabor can be quite bad. we are towing a 16ft van with Jackeroo which gets around 18l/100k so range is about 350-400k normally but with headwinds couls be less should there be any problems

Just make sure you top up at each roadhouse and keep the speed down between 75 - 85 and all should be OK.
Last year Nullabor roadhouse was charging $1.10 per litre for auto gas so I refused to fill up there. With the head winds I never made it to Border village.
I filled up at Nundroo and used 62 liters of auto gas and 75 liters of petrol and ran out of fuel 15 klicks East of Border Village, I was only doing around 75 K's per hour.
