What a week , the cyclone did come over land & we had 48hrs of wind & rain,350ml. The river continued to rise for another 40hrs. There is no height measuring system down stream of Roper Bar & this one reached 10.5mtr. Then you have the Wilton Rv out of Arnem land & the Hodgson from the south that flow into the roper before it reaches the camp at Tomato Isl.
Three vans had to be moved to higher ground ,two of which [car & van] had to be rescured by three 4x4 with winches, one bogged nissan took 5hrs to be recovered as it was side on to the only recovery point. We were ok & didnt have to move, the water was within ten mtrs of our camp &300ml below.close enough. No one will be able to drive out of here for another week or more. May be the fishing will come on by then.
There is a resident camper here who operates a barge on the river bringing in supplies & moving cars accross in the wet.He & his wife were kind enough to take all the campers for a 37kl trip up stream to Roper bar store yesterday afternoon. The store owner met the boat with a bus & took us to the shop for supplies , hambergers for dinner & a sunset cruise back down the river to camp.A sight to see with the flood waters, many thanks to Bruce & Mary for their hospitality.
Pic no 1 site of bogged nissan. [no pic as it was in the night & raining, no place for a camera]
pic no2 , our camp.
pic no3, river cruise.
Happy Easter to all .
