Deep cycle batteries

Hi

Could someone tell me if deep cycle batteries have a "use by date"?  i.e.  do they only last for a certain number of years and then need replacing?  Sorry if this is a stupid question!

Un fortunately all batterys slowly die from day of manufacture, even if they are on a float charger. So only buy fresh batterys not old stock. The other part of the equasion is how deep & how often you discharge a battery as to how long it will last. As an example I have a N70ZZ battery that has been looked after & is 9yrs old & working but at half capacity, That is it will run my dive compressor for 1Hr where it used to run for 2Hrs. Cheers Daryl

Further to Daryl's response above, it is important that the battery is not allowed to totally discharge ("go flat" in other words) as this will seriously shorten the life of the battery. If this happens it should be fully recharged asap. It is also important to regularly check the electrolyte level and top up with battery water (not tap water).

Earlier this week I was visiting an old mate who said the deep cycle batteries in his van are a similar age to Daryl's. He has a 200 ah battery bank consisting of two 200ah 6 volt series connected batteries that he leaves permanently connected to solar panels.

PS: The only stupid questions are the ones that aren't asked!
