G'day Jimbo & Shirley,

Albany and Magaret River areas, South West WA, can be quite cold, wet and windy May to September.  Most people head for the Northern winter which is nice and warm and dry.

Go for it! Good on ya.
Just a note about dogs in Broome. None of the parks take dogs. If you get there in peak season, the overflow area at the pistol club takes dogs.
If you don't want to do that you can park at the Roebuck Turntable Roadhouse about 30kms out of town, a the intersection at the end of the highway where you decide whether you go to Broome or Derby.
It's quite a shady spot, quite comfortable and a bit busy during the day with trucks fuelling up. On the other hand you'll get to see some really great rigs which traverse the highway between Perth and everywhere north. You may even get to chat to some of the drivers.
There's an upside to everything.
There are a lot of free camps in WA. The south and south west is beautiful. The coast road takes you to some wonderful townships and coastal sights. The inland road also takes you to some wonderful country. I'd give Monkey Mia a miss for a whole lot of reasons, but when you go to Bunbury check out the dolphin tour. Better value.
You're going to have a great trip. Stay safe.

Jimbo,

Was interested to read you are on your way to WA, & also note with interest you play the noble game of lawn bowls!
There is a "northern run" in WA coming up soon. Starting at Dongara then Geraldton, Northampton, Carnarvon, Dampier Karratha and finally finishing at Pt. Headland around the 12 July.
If you wish, I can send you dates of the carnivals!
We did some of them last year & had a "ball" - even won some money which is a definate bonus, so we are returning again this year!

I am not sure of your set up but some of our favourite places are Kunnanara, plenty to see.
South of Broome we enjoy Barn Hill. Pardoo station. Cleaverville, north of Karratha and Warroora Station south of Coral Bay. the last 2 are camp areas where you need your own water supply but you can pick up water from adjacent towns at no cost. we usually go in about every 8 to 9 days to shop anyway. Broomein my opinion is highly overrated go there once is enough there is a bueatiful coast line below there and fellow travellers will tellyou where to go.
The South of WA is ok if you like closed in forest drives and winerys but I prefer goodold open space.

Shirls and I have decided on a Motor Home...We drove one around the U S years ago...30 foot American Cruise Winnebago...

Seeing a few on this  site has enthused me somewhat..Also where I camp on the Murray at Echuca...I'm getting to see and talk to a few people who are very satisfied with our Australian made ones

there is a vast amount of motor homes in aus, i had a look at a few before we bought ours and still looking just to get ideas on what we could do with ours too , caravan shows are great for these too, although can make your head spin at some of the prices !!
we may catch up some where out there... good luck.

No matter where you travel there will be activities, sights and places which will favour one traveller more than another. It's all in the eye of the participant.
North of Pt. Hedland there are quite a few free camps but the national park camps such as Cape Keraudron, won't take dogs.
There's Port Smith which is also a very friendly, happy place for people and well-behaved dogs, with lots of sociable campers, mostly there to fish, but I don't think they'd mind if you had some fun while you were there. They have a small bowling rink and bbq's as well.
The stations are good too.
If you're travelling between June and September you'll need to plan ahead. It's the busiest time of the year, and many have annual bookings. Newcomers have to squeeze in between them, but you'd be welcome anyway if they have space.
I don't know if the other stations take you for tours around the property when you camp on them. All you have to do is ask.
Oooo, this is exciting. I miss the west, especially that Kimberley country.
Oh, check out the peninsula to the north of Broome, the Dampier Peninsula and visit Beagle Bay, with the pearl shell church, or some of the beautiful coast north of Willy Creek. It's endless. Have fun.
