ROAD TO DARWIN

I know I'm being lazy, but word of mouth is way better than something written in a book.

My question:

Free camps between Lithgow - Broken Hill - Port Augusta - Woomera and then on to Darwin.

Ones to avoid and ones to definitely stop at.

Any suggestions greatfully received.

Meadow Glen, 63km west of Cobar - Camps4, 921, Camps5, 1051

Banka Banka, NT, 74 km north of Three Ways - Camps4, 71, Camps5, 91 (fee) 08 8946 4511

Alice Springs, Todd River (at your own risk). Seriously, take a caravan park in Alice, don't free camp unless well out of town.

Coober Pedy - worth a few days but take a caravan park

Would recommend that you stay in Port Pirie rather than Port Augusta, we have heard of a few scary things happening there. The park at Port Pirie is cheap and quiet, can recommend it. Also, stay in a park at Coober Pedy and Alice Springs, much safer.

Thanks WilliamIII, I should have been a little clearer than "fee" in brackets, easy to misread as free, check ahead for cost and vacancy. Renner Springs CP not far away if no vacancy. Pub and Bistro at R Springs.

Thank you all so much for your advise.

We hit the road tomorrow and with a bit of luck won't be home till early October.

Safe travels to one and all.

Hope to catch up with a few of you on the trip

Hi Ma,
Just be careful in Coober Pedy with the caravan parks as they charge extra for showers the underground one doesn't. Have a great trip look forward to hearing about it drive safe Helena.

Stayed at the Oasis CP a few years back, can't recall them charging for water then but they may have. Don't know what the water supply is in Coober P but if it's being carted in it would quite expensive, hence the charge.

Banka Banka ,No powered sites & $17.
The freeby just south is not bad, picnic sheds & toots.

When in Katherine, stay at the Banana farm on Zimmin Road. Just 5kms from the centre of town. $6 per night powered! Yes, POWERED!! Hosts Cath and David.
Hot showers, loo.
facilities are pretty old, but the price was worth it. Hospitality awesome.
Cheers
Dianne
