Why is it so expensive to rego a van in NSW. My mere 16 Ft van which spends about a max of 30 days on the road cost $255.00 while my boat and trailer which is much heavier than the van and spend more time on the road cost $55.00 Even a 2 tonne box trailer or car transporter cost less than a van

couldn't agree more. i just registered mine in WA for the first time. It cost $90 which included new plates etc and next year will be only $57. In NSW it would have cost $279 to reregister plus About $40 for an inspection. you need an address in WA.
They do it because they can, however the boat& trailer may be heaver than your van but remember you are only regeristing the trailer with RTA, your boat is with Waterways. I agree it is crazy the difference between states & we can apply the same old problem to a lot of things like this,as Ive said before, we are one country with seven states , not seven countries. Remember that bygone thing we called common sence, they sold it off as well & got nothing for it.

The problem is if they made it national, who's policy would they adopt? If it was Vic or WA it would be good. WA doesn't issue stickers anymore, and Qld is thinking about doing away with them now. Unless you're changing ownership, it's not necessary to go over the pits every year anywhere but NSW either. And you pay for that as well. They've got you by the short and curlies in NSW. The only solution to that problem is LEAVE!! Get the hell out of there and find a better state to live in. Or, just keep going.

Cruisin Granny, in NT new cars don't have to go over the pits(apart for the original compliance check)for three years then it is two yearly until the car reaches ten years then it is yearly for ever after that. we also pay for these inspections but they can also done at any approved service station/motor dealer with a license. caravans and trailers fitted with brakes are done every two years. Cheers Jack

In WA (Wait Awhile) the only time a car has to go over the pit is if the rego expires or police put a sticker on it. A car could be 40 yrs old, changed hands 10 times and provided the rego is paid it never gets inspected. That's why there are so many old bangers on the roads here that would never pass a roadworthy and why many impounded cars are never collected - cheaper to buy another one. Scary really.

Qld is not a great deal better, our 17'6" van had a rego cost of $157.50 last October - this year who knows what it will cost. In contrast our camper trailer was $94.65

The empirical evidence linking regular vehicle examinations with reductions in road incidents is very tenuous indeed. Many researchers have commented that examinations would have to be conducted weekly, or at least monthly, to have any significant effect on the rate of mechanically induced road trauma.

Iv,e been in the motor vehicle game for 35yrs & involved with doing rego inspections. If you were to see some of the cars that are presented for road worthy checks you would be horrified.Suspension parts worn out , tyres with steel belts exposed & the list goes on. This is what YOU are meeting on the road & it could be your life at stake. I will never change my view on the value of the inspection. It is in your own interest as well.

Totally agree in fact I thing that once a new vehicle is involved in a accident that damages the front end then the 5 year waiver should be voided and it then goes yearly. I am never surprised when I see a near new or even new vehicle with defective lights or tracking like a crab it's just par for the course .
I can't figure this state thing out , Uncle Kev can come up with a policy to save the world from global warming but can't get the states and territories to get there crap together . When the topic gets a mention the pollies shudder and throw their hands in the air and call it all to hard , may be policy review at home should be a top priority rather than strutting the world stage looking for a photo op.

Mate, I just got back to this as i,ve been on the road, tyres & brakes need to be road worthy at the time of inspection, it is up to the owner after that to look after the wear & tear facter.gaskets & oil seals can start leaking anytime .Fluro lights are not part of the road worthy.stop lights & head lights again can fail any time, This person sounds like he can destroy any thing ,he has driven it to the ground knowing that he was going to sell it. I,ve seen it all before & some should not be able to own a vehicle when you consider the saftey of others .
If I remember correctly, he met you some where with the bus for the change over. He didnt want you on his home turf .In other words he saw you comming & didnt want you to be able to look to hard at the unit. The smart thing to have done was to request a road worthy with the bus.
I know this dosen,t help you much but he has pulled a swiftie on you & got awaywith it.If you have his contact give him a big serve in righting ,[cant hang up on that] it may be the only satisfaction you will get.
