grey nomads

hi all,
i was just wondering just how old you have to be to be a grey nomad and what being a grey nomad entails,, i'm only 53 and my wife is 45, we both still work but like to get away when we can for a weekend f an extended break,, we just got back from cooktown in far north queensland, not that we drove we flew and hire a car , does that cancell us out from being nomads, i wonder?
I'm off to a dry salt lake (well i hope it's dry) soon to do a bit of land sailing for a week does that make me a member of the grey nomads, again i wonder ? are we somewhere inbetween being grey nomads and just tourists (yuk)
i am and have been an interstate long haul truck driver, yes i know the bain of all caravanners, and i swore that i would never become like them, what like them was, but as i get older and slower i think well maybe "they" aren't so bad after all so to anyone i may have beeped my horn at i'm sorry..
i think sharron (the wife) and i are going to enjoy being "grey nomads" if not now then someday when the time arrives...
cheers to all
bb
wink

Hi and welcome,

I think I can speak on behalf all "GN forumites" in saying you're most welcome here, full time, part time, occasional or just interested, it doesn't matter.

I was a log haul truck driver in a previous life too bb and like you swore I would NEVER EVER tow a van.   Guess what??  laughing.gif     It does make you a bit more aware though of the relationship between truck drivers and van towers and therefore more mindful of how trucks operate and hence we are just a tad more considerate than those that havent' been down our track.

We are in Coober Pedy at the moment and still have another 19 weeks on the road, been gone since 24th April and I can truthfully say that we haven't had one bad experience with a truck.

Happy travels,

Elaine

Hi, we are in the same situation, the same ages. I think this forum and website is so useful for information, ideas and experience. We like that we can get away for a long weekend here and there and also plan longer breaks,we are looking forward to the time when we can get on the road for extended periods of time and see more of this fantastic country.

No, no, BB - you're both much too young to be Grey Nomads; they're OLD people! My OT John has been 55 now for nineteen years and still refuses to be called a GN. ;)

Welcome to you both; we can all learn so much from each other. Happy towing and safe travels!

Just tuck in behind one and yes the foot has to come off a lot. thats when they sit on the ton, not the 100+ ones. I always ask first... Dont feel bad. The wife learnt to sware listen to ch 40. Just kidding...Dont know when the tipping point is from normal to being a GN,,,,,?I still think Im normal but who can tell....Bob n Bev

Hi BB,
We are new to this site and very similiar ages - so at present get away in the van whenever we can but definitely getting on the road in 3yrs full time doing working holiday trip around Aus but the way we are feeling at the moment maybe next year will be the year. - Living in SE Qld we try to use the van every month - we both work pretty stressed jobs and using the van is the way we stay sane!!!!
Look forward to getting to know you all.

"What age makes you a grey nomad?" I hear you ask.  I retired as soon as I possibly could - my wife and I were both aged 54.  Days later we bought a camper trailer and set out.  We went round Australia, through Australia - over and over. At the age of 62 my wife had a massive stroke but pulled through it.  If we had waited until the standard 65, we would have missed a lot.  We will set out again this Friday 11th June on another five-month epic.  I guess what I'm trying to say is: I was a 54-year old full-time Grey Nomad.

You're never too young.

yes we decided to be come one of the great crew roaming around this great land.
Im 52 Wife 63 we have had too many of our freinds say they would sell up and travel
but they didn't make it now traveling the nomads in heaven or teh other that's what made our disition to sell up all and off we go, so i don't think it maters what your age is
we are all in the same way of living, after doing this and yes we are still new at this only been on road for 5 weeks but wish i did  this years ago, i think all you guys will agree
with me you don't need the big house with the pool and all the stress that goes with it
you have everything you need on wheels behind you car, sorry to carry on but life is great this is the only way to go

living the dream

Beachball57 - you are never too old - or too young. Get out and enjoy the ride while you can,,,

Husband and I have only been together 15 years, (both second time around) so have lots to catch up on.  Have travelled Brissy - Great Ocean Road on BM K1100 towing trailer - pub stays, Brisbane to Winton BM K1100 towing trailer, camping in small dome tent, brisbane to carnarvon gorge with camry, roof rack packed to the hilt with small dome tent, other various local campingsite, before upgrading to swJackaroo & campertrailer, which has has us to Tassy, Flinders, Snowy Mts, Murray river several times... and the list goes on.

We did not class ourselves as GN on these trips, but simply as "travellers", who were practising for when they become GN!

Recent ill health has bough forward the concept of being on the road fulltime.  BB57 - just get out there and do it!

Congratulations BB on your recent wedding - our anniversary is 4th May - spent one of them outside Buck House in London! (didn't mention that trip in my earlier post)

SA is beautiful - we hope to head back there when our time comes next year. I would be checking out the state of the salt lakes first, not sure about torrens & frome, but eyre has had water in it recently
